What's in the Box

Your GE Enbrighten Z-Wave Plus Smart Fan Control package includes the smart fan control switch, a matching wall plate, wire connectors, and installation instructions. This in-wall device replaces a standard toggle or paddle fan switch and uses Z-Wave Plus to communicate with your smart home hub. It provides four fan speed levels along with an off position, giving you precise control over ceiling fan airflow.

Prerequisites

  • A compatible Z-Wave hub such as SmartThings, Hubitat, Wink, or a Z-Wave USB stick with Home Assistant
  • A ceiling fan with a single-pole wiring configuration (hot, neutral, ground, and load wires)
  • A neutral wire in the switch box — this device requires a neutral connection
  • Basic electrical tools: screwdriver, wire stripper, voltage tester, and wire nuts
  • Comfort with basic wiring, or hire a licensed electrician

Safety First

Before beginning any wiring work, turn off the circuit breaker that supplies power to the fan switch. Use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the wires in the switch box are not live. Never work on electrical connections with the power on.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Remove the existing switch. Unscrew the wall plate and pull the old switch out of the electrical box. Disconnect the wires and note which wire is the line (power from breaker) and which is the load (going to the fan).
  2. Identify the wires. You should have a line (hot) wire, a load wire, a neutral (white) wire bundle, and a ground wire. If you're unsure which is line and which is load, use a voltage tester with the breaker temporarily on, then turn it back off before proceeding.
  3. Connect the wires. Attach the line wire to the Line terminal on the Enbrighten fan control. Connect the load wire to the Load terminal. Connect the white neutral wire to the Neutral terminal. Attach the green or bare copper ground wire to the Ground terminal.
  4. Secure the switch. Carefully tuck the wires back into the electrical box and mount the fan control using the provided screws. Attach the wall plate.
  5. Restore power. Turn the circuit breaker back on. The LED indicator on the switch should light up, confirming it has power.
  6. Test manually. Press the up and down paddles to cycle through the four fan speeds. Verify that the fan responds at each level and turns off when you press the bottom of the paddle.

Z-Wave Hub Pairing

Put your Z-Wave hub into inclusion mode (the process varies by hub — check your hub's documentation). On the GE Enbrighten fan control, press the top paddle once. The hub should discover the device within a few seconds. Once paired, the fan control will appear as a fan or multilevel switch in your hub's device list. Assign it a name and room for easy management.

Smart Home Integration Tips

With the fan control connected to your Z-Wave hub, you can create automations based on temperature, time of day, or other triggers. For example, set the fan to medium speed when your thermostat reads above 75 degrees, or schedule it to turn off at bedtime. If your hub supports voice assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant, you can use commands such as "Alexa, set the bedroom fan to high." The Z-Wave Plus protocol offers improved range and reliability over older Z-Wave devices, and this switch also acts as a Z-Wave signal repeater to strengthen your mesh network.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the fan control doesn't power on after installation, double-check all wire connections and verify the breaker is on. If the switch won't pair with your hub, try an exclusion process first to clear any previous Z-Wave associations, then attempt inclusion again. If the fan only runs at one speed, make sure the fan itself is not connected through a separate speed controller that may be interfering with the smart control signal.
