What's in the Box
The GE Enbrighten Z-Wave Plus Smart Switch package includes the in-wall smart switch, a wall plate, wire connectors, and an installation guide. This switch replaces a standard toggle or paddle switch and uses Z-Wave Plus to connect to your smart home hub. It provides simple on/off control for lights, fans, and other hardwired fixtures without dimming functionality, making it a great choice for non-dimmable loads.
Prerequisites
- A compatible Z-Wave hub such as SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant (with Z-Wave controller), or Wink
- A single-pole or multi-pole wiring setup with a neutral wire available in the switch box
- Basic electrical tools: Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, wire stripper, non-contact voltage tester, and wire nuts
- For 3-way or 4-way setups, you'll also need a compatible GE Enbrighten Add-On Switch at each secondary location
Safety First
Before touching any wires, turn off the circuit breaker controlling the switch you're replacing. Use a non-contact voltage tester at the switch box to confirm power is off. Never attempt electrical work on a live circuit.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Remove the existing switch. Unscrew and remove the wall plate. Pull the old switch out from the electrical box and disconnect all wires. Identify which wire is line (from the breaker) and which is load (to the fixture).
- Identify all wires. You should find a line (hot) wire, a load wire, a white neutral wire bundle, and a ground wire. If unsure about line versus load, carefully turn the breaker on and test with a voltage tester, then turn the breaker off again before proceeding.
- Connect the smart switch. Attach the line wire to the Line terminal on the Enbrighten switch. Connect the load wire to the Load terminal. Wire the neutral to the Neutral terminal, and fasten the ground wire to the Ground screw.
- Multi-pole wiring. For 3-way configurations, connect the traveler wire to the Traveler terminal. Install a GE Enbrighten Add-On Switch at the other switch location, connecting its traveler wire to the same traveler line. The add-on switch does not have its own Z-Wave radio — it communicates through the wired connection.
- Mount and finish. Tuck the wires neatly into the electrical box, screw the switch into place, and attach the wall plate.
- Power on and test. Flip the circuit breaker back on. Press the top paddle to turn the connected fixture on and the bottom paddle to turn it off. The LED indicator on the switch should be illuminated.
Z-Wave Hub Pairing
Place your Z-Wave hub into inclusion mode according to your hub's instructions. Then tap the top paddle on the Enbrighten switch once. The hub should discover it within seconds and add it as a binary switch device. Name it something descriptive like "Kitchen Overhead" and assign it to the appropriate room in your hub.
Smart Home Integration Tips
After pairing, you can control the switch through your hub's app, set schedules, and build automations. Connect it to Alexa or Google Assistant for voice control with commands like "Alexa, turn off the garage light." The Z-Wave Plus protocol provides reliable communication and this switch acts as a Z-Wave repeater, strengthening your mesh network. Consider pairing it with motion sensors or door sensors to trigger lights automatically when you enter a room.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the switch doesn't power on, recheck all wire connections and make sure the breaker is engaged. If the switch won't pair with your hub, perform a Z-Wave exclusion first to clear any previous network data, then retry inclusion. If the LED indicator blinks but the fixture doesn't respond, verify the load wire is securely connected. For 3-way setups where the add-on switch isn't working, confirm the traveler wire is properly connected at both switch locations.
