Before You Begin
The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) features a large, high-resolution borderless display, Matter support, and a redesigned interface. It learns your temperature preferences over time and automatically creates energy-saving schedules. This latest generation connects via Wi-Fi and supports Thread for Matter-enabled smart home integrations.
What You Will Need
- Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen)
- The included trim kit, mounting plate, and screws
- The included Nest Pro wiring connector
- The Google Home app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
- A Google account
- A compatible HVAC system (the Google Home app includes a compatibility checker)
- A Phillips-head and flat-head screwdriver
- A drill and level (optional but recommended)
- Labels or tape to mark existing thermostat wires
- A C-wire or the included Nest Power Connector if your system lacks a C-wire
Step 1: Check Compatibility
- Open the Google Home app and navigate to Devices > Add > New Device.
- Select the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) and use the built-in compatibility checker. The app will ask about your current thermostat wires to determine if your HVAC system is compatible.
- Alternatively, remove the faceplate from your existing thermostat and note the wire labels (R, W, Y, G, C, etc.). Enter these into the compatibility tool.
- If your system does not have a C-wire (common wire), you will need to install the included Nest Power Connector at your furnace or air handler to provide reliable power.
Step 2: Turn Off HVAC Power
- Turn off the power to your heating and cooling system at the circuit breaker or the system's power switch. This is critical for safety.
- Set your old thermostat to off before disconnecting it.
- Verify the system is off by checking that the furnace or air handler fan is not running.
Step 3: Remove Your Old Thermostat
- Remove the faceplate from your old thermostat.
- Take a photo of the wiring connections for reference before disconnecting anything.
- Label each wire with the terminal letter it is connected to (R, W, Y, G, C, etc.) using the included wire labels or tape.
- Disconnect each wire from the terminals.
- Remove the old mounting plate from the wall. If the screw holes do not match the Nest mounting plate, you may need to patch the old holes.
Step 4: Install the Nest Power Connector (If Needed)
- If your system lacks a C-wire, install the included Nest Power Connector at your furnace or air handler.
- Open the furnace panel and locate the HVAC control board.
- Follow the instructions in the Google Home app or the included guide to connect the Power Connector between the furnace control board and the thermostat wiring.
- Close the furnace panel when finished.
Step 5: Mount the Nest Thermostat
- Thread the labeled thermostat wires through the center opening of the Nest mounting plate.
- Use a level to ensure the plate is straight, then mark the screw holes.
- Drill pilot holes if needed and secure the mounting plate with the included screws.
- Connect each labeled wire to the corresponding terminal on the mounting plate. Press each connector tab down, insert the wire, and release the tab to secure it.
- Attach the trim kit around the mounting plate for a clean, finished appearance.
- Align the thermostat display onto the mounting plate and press firmly until it clicks into place.
Step 6: Power On and Complete Setup
- Turn the HVAC power back on at the circuit breaker.
- The Nest thermostat will power on and display a setup sequence on its screen.
- Open the Google Home app and follow the prompts to complete the setup — connect to Wi-Fi, link your Google account, and configure your heating and cooling preferences.
- Set your preferred temperature schedule or enable Auto-Schedule to let the thermostat learn from your manual adjustments over the first week or two.
- Enable Home/Away Assist to automatically adjust the temperature when you leave and return home based on your phone's location and the thermostat's built-in presence sensor.
Tips for Best Performance
- Allow the Nest Learning Thermostat at least one to two weeks of manual adjustments to build an accurate automatic schedule.
- The 4th Gen model supports Matter, allowing it to work with other Matter-compatible platforms beyond Google Home.
- Use the Energy Dashboard in the Google Home app to track your energy usage and see monthly savings reports.
- The large, borderless display can show weather, time, and device controls at a glance when you walk by, thanks to the built-in proximity sensor.
