What's in the Box
Your Govee Outdoor String Lights RGBIC (48ft) package includes 48 feet of string lights with RGBIC bulbs, a control box, a power adapter, mounting hooks, and a quick start guide. Each bulb on the string is individually addressable thanks to Govee's RGBIC technology, meaning every bulb can display a different color simultaneously. This creates stunning multi-color effects across your patio, deck, or backyard that traditional single-color string lights cannot achieve.
Prerequisites
- A smartphone with the Govee Home app installed (available on iOS and Android)
- A stable 2.4GHz WiFi network that reaches the outdoor installation area
- A Govee Home account created and verified
- A GFCI-protected outdoor power outlet within reach of the power adapter
- Mounting hooks, cup hooks, or guide wire for stringing the lights
- A ladder if mounting hooks at elevated positions
- Dry weather during installation
Step-by-Step Installation
- Plan your layout by determining the start and end points for the string lights. The 48-foot length works well for medium to large patios, deck perimeters, and backyard fence lines. Sketch out a rough plan noting where you will place mounting hooks.
- Install mounting hooks at your planned attachment points. Screw cup hooks into wooden beams, fence posts, or pergola rafters. For masonry surfaces, use appropriate anchors. Space hooks every 8 to 10 feet to prevent excessive sagging, and add a hook at each corner or direction change.
- Starting at the control box end, hang the string lights along your route, draping them from hook to hook. Allow a gentle drape between hooks for an appealing catenary curve rather than pulling the string completely taut.
- At each hook, wrap the string once around the hook or use the included clips to secure it in place. This prevents the string from sliding along the hook in windy conditions.
- Connect the string to the control box and position the control box in a sheltered spot protected from direct rain, such as under an overhang or porch ceiling.
- Plug the power adapter into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet.
App Pairing
- Power on the lights. The bulbs will illuminate and the control box will enter pairing mode with a flashing indicator.
- Open the Govee Home app and tap "+" to add a new device.
- Find the Outdoor String Lights RGBIC in the device list or scan the QR code.
- Enable Bluetooth and pair the device, then connect to your 2.4GHz WiFi network when prompted.
- Name the lights descriptively, such as "Patio String Lights" or "Backyard Lights."
Smart Home Integration Tips
The RGBIC string lights work with Alexa and Google Assistant, making it easy to say "Alexa, turn on the patio lights" when heading outside. The individually addressable bulbs open up creative possibilities through the Govee Home app. Choose from dozens of preset scenes including holiday themes, party modes, and calming ambient effects. Create scheduled automations to turn on at sunset and off at bedtime. The music sync feature uses the control box microphone to match bulb colors to outdoor music, which is perfect for parties and gatherings.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the lights lose WiFi connection, your router signal may not reach the outdoor area reliably. A WiFi extender near a window facing the installation can help. If individual bulbs appear dim or show the wrong color, check that the string is not kinked or damaged at that point. The string lights are weather-resistant, but always use a GFCI outlet for safety and shelter the control box from direct precipitation. If the lights do not pair, power cycle the control box and ensure your phone is within Bluetooth range during initial setup.
