What's in the Box

Your Honeywell Home T5+ Smart Thermostat package includes the thermostat display unit, a backplate with labeled wiring terminals, mounting screws, wire labels, and a setup guide. The T5+ is Honeywell's entry-level smart thermostat, offering WiFi connectivity, app-based scheduling, and geofencing at an affordable price point. It connects to your home network and is controlled through the Honeywell Home app.

Before You Begin

  • Download the Honeywell Home app from the App Store or Google Play
  • Create or sign into your Honeywell Home account
  • Shut off power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker or furnace switch — never work on thermostat wiring with the system powered on
  • Take a clear photo of your current thermostat's wiring as a reference before disconnecting anything
  • Verify your HVAC system is compatible using the Honeywell Home website or app compatibility checker
  • Confirm a C-wire is available. The T5+ requires a C-wire for continuous power. If your existing setup doesn't include one, you'll need a C-wire adapter or to run a new wire from your furnace

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Remove the old thermostat. Pull the cover off your existing thermostat to expose the wiring. Label each wire with the provided stickers before disconnecting. Each sticker should match the terminal letter the wire is currently connected to (R, W, Y, G, C, etc.). Remove the old backplate from the wall.
  2. Install the T5+ backplate. Feed the labeled wires through the center opening of the new backplate. Hold the backplate level against the wall, mark the screw holes, drill pilot holes if necessary, and screw the plate into place.
  3. Connect the wires. Match each labeled wire to its terminal on the T5+ backplate. Push each wire firmly into the terminal until it clicks. Standard connections: R to R (power), W to W (heat), Y to Y (cool), G to G (fan), C to C (common). If you have a heat pump, connect the O/B wire to the O/B terminal.
  4. Snap on the thermostat. Align the T5+ display unit with the backplate and press firmly until it clicks into place. The screen should turn on within a few seconds as the thermostat receives power through the C-wire.
  5. Restore power. Turn the circuit breaker or furnace switch back on. The T5+ will begin its initial setup walkthrough on the display screen.

WiFi and App Setup

  1. Connect to WiFi on the thermostat. Follow the on-screen prompts to select your WiFi network and enter your password. Use a 2.4GHz network — the T5+ does not support 5GHz connections.
  2. Link to the Honeywell Home app. Open the app and tap Add Device. Select the T5+ thermostat. The app will discover the thermostat on your network and walk you through linking it to your account.
  3. Set up a schedule. The T5+ supports flexible scheduling through the Honeywell Home app. Create a 7-day schedule with different temperature setpoints for wake, leave, return, and sleep periods. Enable geofencing to automatically switch to an energy-saving away mode when your phone leaves a defined radius around your home.

Smart Home Integration

The Honeywell Home T5+ integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. Link your Honeywell Home account in the respective app or enable the Honeywell Home skill in Alexa. Voice commands like "Alexa, set the thermostat to 68" or "Hey Siri, what's the temperature?" work seamlessly once linked. You can also use IFTTT to build custom automations, such as lowering the temperature when a window sensor detects an open window.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the T5+ screen stays blank after installation, the most likely issue is a missing or loose C-wire connection. Check both the thermostat end and the furnace control board to verify the C-wire is securely attached at both points. If the HVAC doesn't heat or cool when expected, compare your wiring to the photo you took of the old thermostat and confirm each wire is in the correct terminal. If WiFi setup fails, verify you're selecting a 2.4GHz network and that your password doesn't include special characters that some thermostats struggle with. Restarting your router can also resolve pairing issues if the thermostat can see but not join the network.
