What's in the Box
Your Honeywell Home T9 Smart Thermostat package includes the thermostat display unit, a backplate with wiring terminals, mounting screws, wire labels, and an installation guide. Some packages also include a Smart Room Sensor for multi-room temperature monitoring. The T9 connects to your home's WiFi network and is controlled through the Honeywell Home app, offering room-by-room comfort with optional wireless sensors.
Before You Begin
- Download the Honeywell Home app from the App Store or Google Play
- Create or sign into your Honeywell Home account
- Turn off power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker or the furnace switch before starting installation
- Take a photo of your existing thermostat's wiring before disconnecting anything — this is crucial for reference
- Verify your HVAC system is compatible by checking the Honeywell Home compatibility tool online or in the app
- Confirm you have a C-wire (common wire) — the T9 requires one for continuous power. If you don't have a C-wire, you'll need to install one or use a C-wire adapter
Step-by-Step Installation
- Remove the old thermostat. Pull the faceplate off your old thermostat. Before disconnecting any wires, label each one with the provided wire labels matching the terminal letter it's currently connected to (R, W, Y, G, C, etc.). Then unscrew and remove the old backplate from the wall.
- Install the T9 backplate. Thread the labeled wires through the opening in the new backplate. Level the backplate against the wall and mark the screw holes. Drill pilot holes if necessary, then screw the backplate securely into place.
- Connect the wires. Match each labeled wire to its corresponding terminal on the T9 backplate. Push each wire firmly into the terminal connector — you'll hear a click when it's secure. Connect: R (power) to R, W (heat) to W, Y (cooling) to Y, G (fan) to G, and C (common) to C. If you have a dual-fuel or heat pump system, you may also have O/B and AUX wires.
- Attach the thermostat. Snap the T9 display unit onto the backplate. It should click securely into place and the screen should power on within a few seconds.
- Restore power. Turn the circuit breaker or furnace switch back on. The T9 will boot up and walk you through the initial setup on its touchscreen.
WiFi and App Setup
- Follow the on-screen prompts. The T9 will ask you to select your WiFi network and enter your password. Use a 2.4GHz network — the T9 does not support 5GHz.
- Open the Honeywell Home app. Tap Add Device and select the T9 thermostat. The app will detect the thermostat on your network and link it to your account.
- Configure your schedule. Set up heating and cooling schedules through the app or directly on the thermostat. The T9 supports geofencing, which adjusts temperature based on whether you're home or away.
Smart Room Sensors
If your package includes a Smart Room Sensor, place it in a room where you want to prioritize comfort (such as a bedroom or home office). Pair it through the Honeywell Home app under the T9's device settings. The sensor reports temperature and occupancy, allowing the T9 to focus heating or cooling on occupied rooms rather than just the hallway where the thermostat is typically mounted.
Smart Home Integration
The T9 works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. Link your Honeywell Home account in the respective app to enable voice commands like "Alexa, set the thermostat to 72" or "Hey Siri, what's the temperature inside?" The T9 also integrates with IFTTT for advanced automations.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the T9 doesn't power on after installation, verify the C-wire is connected at both the thermostat and the furnace control board. A missing C-wire connection is the most common installation issue. If the thermostat powers on but the HVAC doesn't respond, double-check that the R, W, Y, and G wires are in the correct terminals by comparing to your pre-installation photo. If WiFi won't connect, make sure you're on a 2.4GHz network and that the password is entered correctly.
