What's in the Box

The IKEA TRADFRI Wireless Dimmer package includes the dimmer dial itself, a magnetic mounting plate with adhesive backing, and a quick start guide. The dimmer is a small, round, battery-powered device that lets you adjust the brightness of paired IKEA smart bulbs by rotating it. It uses the Zigbee protocol to communicate with your IKEA smart home hub or directly with compatible bulbs. A CR2032 coin cell battery comes pre-installed and typically lasts about two years with normal use.

Prerequisites

Before you install the TRADFRI Wireless Dimmer, make sure you have:

  • At least one IKEA TRADFRI smart bulb already set up and connected to your hub
  • An IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway connected to your network (required for app-based pairing)
  • The IKEA Home Smart app installed on your smartphone
  • A clean, smooth surface where you want to mount the dimmer — a wall, bedside table, or the side of a lamp all work well

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Remove the battery tab. Turn the dimmer over and pull out the plastic battery isolation tab to activate the CR2032 battery. A small LED on the front of the dimmer may briefly flash to confirm power.
  2. Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Navigate to the home screen and tap the "+" icon to add a new device. Select "Remote or controller" from the device categories.
  3. Put the dimmer in pairing mode. Press and hold the pairing button on the back of the dimmer (next to the battery compartment) for about 10 seconds until the front LED starts pulsing. The app should detect the dimmer within a few moments.
  4. Confirm pairing. When the dimmer appears in the app, tap to pair it and give it a name like "Bedroom Dimmer." Assign it to the same room as the lights you want to control.
  5. Link to lights. In the IKEA Home Smart app, go to the dimmer's settings and assign it to specific bulbs or a group of bulbs. The dimmer will then control the brightness of those linked lights when rotated.
  6. Mount the dimmer. Peel the adhesive backing off the magnetic mounting plate and press it firmly onto your desired surface. Let it adhere for at least 30 seconds. The dimmer magnetically snaps onto the plate, so you can easily remove it for battery replacement later.

Using the Dimmer

Rotate the dimmer clockwise to increase brightness and counterclockwise to decrease it. A quick press of the dimmer will toggle the paired lights on and off. The dimmer has a satisfying, tactile rotation with subtle detents so you can feel the brightness levels change. It works even when your phone is not nearby, since it communicates directly with the bulbs over Zigbee after the initial pairing is complete.

Smart Home Integration Tips

While the TRADFRI Wireless Dimmer cannot be directly controlled through Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa (it is an input device, not a controllable one), the lights it controls can be part of those ecosystems through the Dirigera hub. This means you can use both the physical dimmer and voice commands to control the same lights without conflict. In Home Assistant, the dimmer can be exposed as a device with rotation and press events, allowing you to create custom automations triggered by dimmer actions.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the dimmer stops responding, start by replacing the CR2032 battery — a low battery is the most common cause of issues. If it still does not work, re-pair the dimmer by holding the pairing button for 10 seconds and repeating the setup process. Make sure the dimmer is within Zigbee range of your hub or the nearest Zigbee device in the mesh network, ideally within 30 feet. If the adhesive mounting plate loses its grip over time, clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol and apply a new adhesive strip.
