What's in the Box

The Kasa Smart Video Doorbell package includes the doorbell camera unit, a mounting bracket with wedge angle adapter, a USB charging cable, screws and anchors for mounting, a chime connector (for wired installation), wire extensions, and a quick start guide. The Kasa Video Doorbell can be powered by its built-in rechargeable battery or connected to existing doorbell wiring (8-24V AC) for continuous power. No hub is required — the doorbell connects directly to your WiFi network.

Prerequisites

Before installation, confirm you have the following:

  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network with strong signal at your front door (5 GHz is not supported)
  • The Kasa Smart app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • A TP-Link account set up in the Kasa app
  • A drill with appropriate bits for your mounting surface (wood, brick, or siding)
  • If using wired installation: existing doorbell wiring (8-24V AC) and a compatible chime
  • If using battery power: fully charge the doorbell before mounting using the included USB cable

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. If you plan to wire the doorbell, turn off the circuit breaker for your existing doorbell. Remove the old doorbell unit and note the two low-voltage wires coming from the wall.
  2. For battery installation, charge the doorbell fully using the included USB cable before mounting. A full charge takes approximately 6 to 8 hours.
  3. Hold the mounting bracket against the wall at your desired location, approximately 48 inches from the ground for optimal viewing angle. Use the bracket as a template to mark screw holes, then drill and insert the included anchors.
  4. If wiring, connect the two doorbell wires to the terminals on the back of the mounting bracket (polarity does not matter for AC doorbell wiring). Install the chime connector on your indoor chime unit following the guide.
  5. Secure the mounting bracket to the wall with the included screws. Use the angle wedge adapter if you need to tilt the doorbell to face the walkway more directly.
  6. Snap the doorbell unit onto the mounting bracket until it clicks into place. The LED ring will light up to indicate it is powered on.

App Pairing and Configuration

Open the Kasa Smart app, tap "+," select "Smart Doorbells," and choose the Kasa Video Doorbell. Follow the prompts to connect it to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Once paired, configure motion detection zones to reduce false alerts from passing cars or pedestrians on the sidewalk. Set motion sensitivity to medium initially and adjust based on your experience. Enable person detection if available to prioritize alerts for people over animals or vehicles. The doorbell supports microSD card storage (up to 128 GB) for local video recording, or you can subscribe to Kasa Care for cloud storage with extended history.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The Kasa Video Doorbell works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Link your Kasa account and say "Alexa, show me the front door" to pull up a live view on an Echo Show, or "Hey Google, stream the doorbell" on a Nest Hub. Set up Alexa announcements so your Echo devices announce "Someone is at the front door" when the doorbell button is pressed. You can also create routines that trigger other smart devices when motion is detected, such as turning on the porch light when someone approaches after dark.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the doorbell does not power on, verify the battery is charged (for battery mode) or check the breaker and wiring connections (for wired mode). If it does not connect to WiFi, ensure your 2.4 GHz signal is strong at the door — exterior walls and distance can weaken WiFi significantly. A mesh WiFi node near the front of the house can help. If motion alerts are too frequent, narrow the detection zone and reduce sensitivity in the app. If the doorbell chime does not ring when the button is pressed on a wired installation, verify the chime connector is properly installed and the chime is compatible with the required voltage range.
