What's in the Box
Your Kwikset Halo WiFi Smart Lock Keypad package includes the exterior assembly with illuminated touchscreen keypad, interior assembly with thumb turn, mounting plate, strike plate, two backup keys, four AA batteries, and installation hardware. A door prep template and quick-start guide are also included. Check that all components are present before starting the installation.
Prerequisites
The Halo WiFi requires a standard deadbolt door preparation with a 2-1/8" cross bore and 1" edge bore. Your door thickness must be between 1-3/8" and 2". You'll need a Phillips screwdriver for installation. Make sure your home WiFi router broadcasts on the 2.4GHz frequency band, as the Halo does not connect to 5GHz networks. Download the Kwikset app from the App Store or Google Play and create an account before beginning.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Remove your existing deadbolt completely, including the strike plate from the door frame.
- Insert the new latch bolt assembly into the edge bore with the "UP" marking facing upward. Secure the latch plate flush against the door edge with the provided screws.
- Feed the exterior assembly's cable through the latch hole from the outside of the door. Ensure the keypad sits straight and flush against the door surface.
- From the interior side, connect the ribbon cable from the exterior assembly to the port on the interior mounting plate. Route the cable carefully to avoid pinching.
- Align the mounting plate over the bolt posts and secure with the two long screws. Tighten evenly, alternating between screws to maintain alignment. Avoid overtightening, which can cause the deadbolt to bind.
- Snap the interior assembly onto the mounting plate until you hear a click.
- Install the strike plate on the door frame, ensuring the deadbolt extends smoothly into the strike pocket.
- Insert four new AA batteries into the interior battery compartment. The keypad should illuminate briefly to confirm power.
- Test the thumb turn, manual key, and keypad before proceeding to app setup. The default user code is printed on your quick-start card.
Pairing with the Kwikset App
Open the Kwikset app and tap "Add Device," then select "Halo" from the list. The app will instruct you to put the lock in pairing mode by pressing the "A" button on the interior assembly. Enter your WiFi credentials when prompted. Keep your phone close to the lock during setup. Once connected, the app will prompt you to create a master PIN code and delete the default code. You can add up to 250 user codes with customizable access schedules for family members, guests, or service providers.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The Kwikset Halo connects directly to WiFi, so no additional hub is required. It works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control. Link your Kwikset account through the Alexa or Google Home app to enable commands like "Alexa, lock the front door." For security, voice unlocking requires a spoken PIN. The Halo also supports IFTTT applets, allowing automations such as locking the door automatically when your Nest thermostat switches to "Away" mode. Check the Kwikset app for firmware updates periodically to ensure you have the latest features and security patches.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the keypad doesn't illuminate, verify battery orientation and that fresh alkaline batteries are installed. If the lock struggles to connect to WiFi, confirm you're using a 2.4GHz network and that the signal reaches your door. You can check WiFi signal strength in the Kwikset app under lock settings. If the deadbolt binds or doesn't extend fully, slightly loosen the mounting screws and realign the assembly. A factory reset can be performed by removing a battery, pressing and holding the program button, reinserting the battery, and holding for 30 seconds until the lock beeps.
