What You'll Need
- Lennox iComfort S30 Ultra Smart Thermostat
- Lennox iComfort app (iOS or Android)
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Lennox iComfort-compatible HVAC system
- Professional Lennox dealer (strongly recommended for installation)
Before You Start
The Lennox iComfort S30 is a premium, proprietary thermostat designed specifically for Lennox communicating HVAC systems. Unlike universal smart thermostats that use standard 24V wiring, the S30 uses a digital communication bus to talk directly to Lennox furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps. This allows it to control variable-speed compressors, modulating gas valves, and other advanced Lennox equipment features that standard thermostats cannot access.
Important: Proprietary System
The S30 does not work with non-Lennox HVAC equipment. It requires a Lennox iComfort-enabled system with the communicating bus interface. If you have a standard HVAC system from another manufacturer, this thermostat is not compatible. Additionally, Lennox strongly recommends professional installation by an authorized dealer, as improper setup can void your equipment warranty.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Professional installation is recommended. A Lennox dealer will ensure the thermostat is properly paired with your communicating system and all advanced features are configured correctly.
- Shut down the HVAC system at the disconnect or breaker.
- Mount the S30 thermostat following Lennox installation specifications. The S30 connects via the Lennox communication bus, not standard thermostat wires.
- Connect the communication wires from the indoor unit to the thermostat. These carry both power and data.
- Power up the system.
- Run the initial configuration on the 7-inch HD touchscreen. The S30 will detect connected Lennox equipment and configure itself.
- Connect to Wi-Fi through the touchscreen settings.
- Download the iComfort app and register your system using the serial number and registration code shown on the thermostat.
HVAC Compatibility Notes
The S30 works exclusively with Lennox iComfort-compatible equipment. It supports variable-speed furnaces, variable-capacity air conditioners and heat pumps, and integrates with Lennox PureAir air purification systems. Through the communicating bus, the thermostat can control precise heating and cooling output levels (not just on/off stages), manage airflow in CFM increments, and coordinate equipment for maximum efficiency. If your Lennox system includes multiple indoor zones, the S30 can manage zoning through Lennox's iHarmony zoning system.
Smart Home Integration
The iComfort S30 works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control. You can adjust temperature, change modes, and check system status by voice. Apple HomeKit is not supported. The iComfort app provides full remote control, scheduling, diagnostics, and energy reporting. The S30 also supports Lennox's own automation features like "Smart Away" and "Feels Like" temperature adjustments that factor in humidity. Integration with third-party platforms beyond Alexa and Google is limited due to the proprietary nature of the system.
Energy Saving Features
- Variable-speed system optimization lets the S30 precisely match heating and cooling output to the current demand, avoiding the energy waste of constantly cycling between full on and off
- Precise humidity control manages both humidification and dehumidification by coordinating with Lennox equipment for optimal comfort without overcooling
- Air quality monitoring tracks particle counts and triggers the PureAir system or ventilation when air quality drops
- Smart Away detects when you leave (via the iComfort app or thermostat sensors) and reduces output to save energy
- "Feels Like" temperature factors in humidity so the system delivers real comfort rather than just a dry temperature number
- Energy reports in the app show detailed runtime, output levels, and efficiency metrics
Troubleshooting
- System diagnostics: The S30 provides real-time diagnostics for all connected Lennox equipment. Check the Diagnostics section on the touchscreen or in the iComfort app to see alerts, error codes, and system health status. This is one of the major advantages of a communicating system -- the thermostat knows exactly what is happening with each piece of equipment.
- Alerts and maintenance reminders: The S30 tracks runtime and conditions to generate maintenance alerts for filter changes, UV lamp replacement, and system inspections. Do not ignore these -- keeping up with maintenance is critical for variable-speed equipment longevity.
- Dealer service required: Some configuration changes and all warranty-related service require an authorized Lennox dealer. Features like zone balancing, airflow calibration, and communication bus troubleshooting should not be attempted without professional tools.
- Won't connect to Wi-Fi: The S30 supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. If the connection fails, check that your router is not using MAC filtering or device limits that might block the thermostat. Enterprise-grade or mesh networks sometimes require manual approval of new devices.
- Firmware updates: Lennox periodically releases firmware updates for the S30. These are delivered over Wi-Fi and can be installed from the touchscreen settings. Keep the firmware current, as updates may include bug fixes and new features.
- Support: For any issues beyond basic Wi-Fi and scheduling, contact your Lennox dealer. The communicating system's complexity means most problems require dealer-level diagnostic tools.
