What's in the Box

The Level Bolt is a smart deadbolt replacement that fits entirely inside your existing lock, making it completely invisible from the outside. Inside the box, you'll find the Level Bolt motorized assembly, a selection of tailpiece adapters for different lock brands, a CR2 battery, an NFC key card, and an installation guide. Unlike other smart locks, the Level Bolt lets you keep your existing exterior hardware — your door looks exactly the same while gaining smart lock capabilities.

Prerequisites

Before installing the Level Bolt, ensure you have:

  • An existing single-cylinder deadbolt that you want to make smart (the Bolt replaces only the interior portion)
  • A Phillips head screwdriver
  • A smartphone with the Level Home app installed (iOS or Android)
  • Confirm your existing deadbolt uses a standard tailpiece (most major brands are compatible, including Schlage, Kwikset, and Baldwin)
  • A properly aligned door — the deadbolt should extend and retract without resistance

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Remove only the interior side of your existing deadbolt. Unscrew the interior mounting plate and thumb turn assembly. Leave the exterior portion (keyed cylinder) and the bolt mechanism in place — those stay as-is.
  2. Identify the correct tailpiece adapter for your existing lock. The Level Bolt includes multiple adapters to fit different deadbolt brands. Match the adapter to the tailpiece shape visible inside the door.
  3. Slide the appropriate tailpiece adapter onto the existing tailpiece that extends through the door from the exterior cylinder.
  4. Mount the Level Bolt assembly onto the interior side of the door. Align the motor assembly with the tailpiece adapter and secure it using the included mounting screws. The Bolt fits within the standard bore hole, so no door modifications are needed.
  5. Insert the CR2 battery into the Level Bolt's battery compartment. The lock will perform an automatic calibration sequence, cycling the deadbolt several times to learn the locked and unlocked positions.
  6. Test the lock by using the thumb turn on the Level Bolt to lock and unlock the door. Also test with the exterior key to make sure both mechanical and motorized operation work smoothly.

App Pairing and Configuration

Open the Level Home app and tap Add a Device. Select Level Bolt and hold your phone near the lock for Bluetooth pairing. The app will detect the Bolt and guide you through confirming the locked and unlocked positions. You can configure auto-lock to automatically engage the deadbolt after a set period and auto-unlock to disengage the bolt when you approach with your phone. The app also lets you share access with family members and create guest passes with time-limited access.

Smart Home Integration Tips

  • The Level Bolt integrates with Apple HomeKit natively. Add it to the Home app for Siri voice control and automation. With a HomePod or Apple TV as a home hub, you can lock and unlock remotely and receive notifications.
  • Since the Level Bolt keeps your existing exterior hardware, guests and family members can still use a physical key as a backup, which is reassuring for those who aren't tech-savvy.
  • Use the included NFC key card for quick access — simply tap it against the interior side of the lock to toggle the deadbolt.
  • For Amazon Alexa or Google Home integration, the Level Connect Wi-Fi bridge (sold separately) adds Wi-Fi connectivity for voice control and remote lock management beyond Bluetooth range.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the Bolt doesn't calibrate correctly, remove it and verify the tailpiece adapter is the right fit for your deadbolt brand. A mismatched adapter can cause the motor to slip or fail to fully extend the bolt. If the lock operates slowly or inconsistently, check the door alignment first — even minor misalignment causes extra strain on the motor. For Bluetooth pairing issues, make sure you're within three feet of the lock and that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. Replace the CR2 battery when the Level Home app indicates low battery, typically after about one year of normal use.
