What's in the Box

Your LIFX String Lights (Outdoor) package includes a string of individually addressable LED bulbs on a weather-resistant cord, a power adapter, mounting hooks or clips, and a quick-start card. Each bulb on the string can display a different color, creating festive and decorative outdoor lighting effects. The string connects directly to WiFi via an integrated controller without requiring a hub. The cord and bulbs are designed for outdoor use with weather-resistant ratings suitable for patios, pergolas, decks, and garden installations.

Prerequisites

Plan your string light layout before installation. Measure the area to ensure the string length covers your desired span. Common installations include draping across a patio, lining a pergola, wrapping around deck railings, or stringing between posts. You'll need secure mounting points such as hooks, nails, or guide wires to support the weight of the string. Ensure a weatherproof outdoor outlet is accessible near the controller end. Verify your WiFi signal reaches the outdoor area, as exterior walls and distance can weaken 2.4GHz coverage. Download the LIFX app and create an account before installation.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Install mounting hooks or anchors at your planned support points. For pergolas, screw cup hooks along the beams at regular intervals. For open-span installations between posts, run a guide wire first and drape the string along it.
  2. Starting from the controller end near the power outlet, hang the string along your planned route. Leave a gentle droop between mounting points for a classic catenary look, or pull taut for a more modern straight-line appearance.
  3. Secure the string at each mounting point using the included clips or by looping over hooks. Avoid kinking or sharply bending the cord.
  4. Plug the power adapter into a weatherproof outdoor outlet and connect it to the string's controller.
  5. The string will power up and enter pairing mode, with the bulbs cycling through colors.
  6. Open the LIFX app, tap "Add Device," and select the string lights when they appear.
  7. Enter your 2.4GHz WiFi credentials to connect the controller to your network.
  8. Name the string and assign it to an outdoor room. Test the individually addressable bulbs by painting different colors on each one in the LIFX app.

Creating Outdoor Ambiance

The individually addressable bulbs make LIFX String Lights far more versatile than traditional string lights. In the LIFX app, use the "Paint" feature to assign each bulb a different color for a festive rainbow look, or set a consistent warm white around 2700K for a classic bistro ambiance. The "Morph" effect creates a gentle color flow along the string that's perfect for evening gatherings. For holidays, create themed scenes like alternating red and green for Christmas, orange and purple for Halloween, or red, white, and blue for patriotic celebrations. Save these as scenes for instant one-tap activation throughout the year.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The LIFX String Lights work with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. Set up sunset-to-bedtime schedules using the LIFX app's built-in sunrise and sunset automation that adjusts throughout the year. Use voice commands like "Hey Google, turn on the patio lights" or "Alexa, set the deck to party mode." Create HomeKit scenes that activate the string lights as part of an "Entertaining" scene along with outdoor speakers and other smart devices. IFTTT integration allows creative triggers like activating the lights when you arrive home after dark based on your phone's location.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the string doesn't power up, check that the power adapter is plugged into a working outlet and securely connected to the controller. If the app can't find the lights, verify your phone is on 2.4GHz WiFi and that the signal reaches your outdoor area. Reset the string by unplugging and replugging the power five times rapidly. If individual bulbs appear dim or show incorrect colors, check for firmware updates in the LIFX app. In extreme weather, bring the controller end under shelter if possible. Ensure all outdoor electrical connections use weatherproof covers. Inspect mounting points periodically, especially after storms, to ensure the string is secure.
