What's in the Box
Your Lutron Caseta Outdoor Smart Plug package includes the outdoor-rated smart plug, a quick start guide, and a weatherproof housing. The plug features two individually controllable outlets and is designed for outdoor use with a weather-resistant rating suitable for patios, decks, and garden areas. Each outlet can handle loads up to 15A, making it suitable for string lights, holiday decorations, fountains, and other outdoor electrical devices.
Prerequisites
Before setting up the outdoor smart plug, ensure you have:
- A Lutron Caseta Smart Bridge already set up and connected to your home network
- The Lutron Caseta app installed on your smartphone or tablet
- An outdoor GFCI-protected electrical outlet within range of the Smart Bridge (up to 30 feet through standard exterior walls)
- The outdoor devices you plan to control already plugged in and working
The Caseta outdoor plug communicates with the Smart Bridge using Clear Connect RF technology, which operates on a dedicated frequency separate from Wi-Fi. However, the RF signal does need to reach the bridge indoors, so consider bridge placement if the outdoor outlet is far from your router location.
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug the Caseta Outdoor Smart Plug into your outdoor GFCI outlet. The plug should fit snugly and the weather-resistant housing should face downward to protect the connections from rain.
- Verify the GFCI outlet is working by pressing the "Test" and "Reset" buttons on the outlet itself. The smart plug requires a live outlet to function.
- Open the Lutron Caseta app on your phone and tap "Add Device" from the main menu.
- Select "Outdoor Plug" from the device type list. The app will guide you through the pairing process.
- When prompted, press the button on the side of the outdoor plug. The LED indicator will blink to confirm it is in pairing mode.
- The bridge will detect the plug and add it to your system. Name each of the two outlets individually, for example "Patio String Lights" and "Garden Fountain," and assign them to a room.
- Plug your outdoor devices into the two outlets and test control from the app by toggling each outlet on and off.
App Pairing and Scheduling
Once paired, the Caseta app lets you set up schedules for each outlet independently. This is particularly useful for outdoor lighting that you want to turn on at sunset and off at a specific time. The app includes an astronomical clock feature that automatically adjusts on and off times based on your location's sunrise and sunset throughout the year. You can also use the "Smart Away" feature to randomize outdoor light schedules when you're on vacation.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The outdoor plug integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit through the Caseta bridge. Each outlet appears as a separate device in your voice assistant, allowing commands like "Alexa, turn on the patio lights" or "Hey Google, turn off the fountain." Pair a Pico remote with the outdoor plug for quick physical control without pulling out your phone. You can mount the Pico remote near your back door for easy access when heading outside.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the outdoor plug does not respond, first check that the GFCI outlet has not tripped. GFCI outlets can trip during rain or power surges, cutting power to the smart plug. Press the "Reset" button on the outlet to restore power. If the plug is not pairing with the bridge, verify the bridge is within range. Thick exterior walls, metal siding, or stucco with wire mesh can reduce RF range significantly. In these cases, consider relocating the bridge closer to an exterior wall or adding a Caseta signal repeater. To factory reset the plug, press and hold the button on the unit for about 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly.
