What's in the Box

Your Lutron Caseta Smart Fan Speed Control package includes the in-wall fan speed controller, a decorative faceplate and wallplate bracket, wire connectors, and installation instructions. This device replaces a standard single-pole wall switch and provides four-speed fan control (off, low, medium, high, and medium-high) for ceiling fans up to 3.5A. It does not include a dimmer for the fan's light kit, which would require a separate Caseta dimmer on a different circuit.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • A Lutron Caseta Smart Bridge already set up and connected to your router
  • A compatible ceiling fan (single-speed motor fans are not supported; the fan must have a multi-speed motor)
  • A Phillips-head screwdriver and non-contact voltage tester
  • Access to your circuit breaker panel
  • The Lutron Caseta app installed on your phone

This fan controller does not require a neutral wire, making it compatible with most switch boxes. However, it only controls the fan motor. If your fan has a light kit controlled by the same single switch, you will need to separate the circuits or use a fan with a pull chain for the light.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker that controls the fan switch. Use the voltage tester to confirm that no power is flowing to the switch box.
  2. Remove the existing wall switch faceplate and unscrew the switch from the electrical box. Carefully pull it out and note the wiring connections.
  3. Disconnect the wires from the old switch. Identify the hot (line) wire, the load wire going to the fan, and the ground wire.
  4. Connect the green wire on the Caseta fan controller to the ground wire. Connect the black wire to the hot (line) wire and the blue wire to the load wire going to the fan.
  5. Secure all connections with the included wire connectors and carefully tuck the wires into the electrical box.
  6. Mount the fan controller to the box with the provided screws. Attach the wallplate bracket and decorative faceplate.
  7. Turn the circuit breaker back on. The fan controller's LED indicators should light up, and the fan should respond to button presses on the controller.

App Pairing

Open the Lutron Caseta app and tap "Add Device." Select "Fan Controls" from the list of device types. Follow the on-screen instructions and press the top button on the fan controller when prompted to enter pairing mode. The Smart Bridge communicates with the fan controller using Clear Connect RF technology, providing reliable wireless communication independent of your Wi-Fi network. Once paired, assign the controller a name and room. The app will display a fan speed slider that lets you choose between the four speed settings.

Smart Home Integration Tips

After pairing, the fan controller is available through Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. You can use voice commands like "Alexa, set the bedroom fan to medium" or "Hey Siri, turn off the ceiling fan." Pair a Pico remote with the fan controller to add a convenient bedside or secondary wall control. The fan-specific Pico remote includes dedicated speed buttons for quick adjustments. You can also create schedules in the Caseta app to automatically turn the fan on at bedtime and off in the morning.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the fan does not respond after installation, verify that the fan's pull chain is set to the highest speed position so that the Caseta controller can manage speed electronically. If the fan hums or buzzes at lower speeds, this is typically caused by the fan motor type. Lutron's fan controller works best with standard AC motor ceiling fans. DC motor fans and fans with built-in electronic speed controls are not compatible. If the controller does not pair with the bridge, ensure you are within 30 feet and try resetting the device by pressing the top button three times, then holding the bottom button until the LEDs blink.
