What's in the Box
Your Lutron Caseta Wireless Smart Dimmer Switch package includes the in-wall dimmer, a matching faceplate, a wallplate bracket, wire connectors, and installation instructions. If you purchased a starter kit, you may also have a Pico remote and a Smart Bridge included. The dimmer replaces your existing single-pole or multi-location toggle or rocker switch and works with dimmable LED, halogen, and incandescent bulbs up to 150W for LEDs or 600W for incandescent and halogen.
Prerequisites
Before beginning installation, ensure you have the following:
- A Lutron Caseta Smart Bridge already set up on your network (the dimmer requires the bridge to enable smart features)
- A Phillips-head screwdriver and a voltage tester or non-contact circuit tester
- Dimmable light bulbs compatible with Lutron (check the Lutron LED compatibility tool at lutron.com)
- Access to your home's electrical panel to turn off the correct circuit breaker
The Caseta dimmer does not require a neutral wire, making it compatible with most homes, including older construction where neutral wires may not be present in the switch box.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Turn off the circuit breaker controlling the switch you are replacing. Use a voltage tester at the existing switch to confirm power is off before touching any wires.
- Remove the existing switch's faceplate and unscrew the switch from the electrical box. Carefully pull the switch out and note the wire connections.
- Disconnect the wires from the old switch. You should see a hot (line) wire, a load wire going to the light fixture, and a ground wire. Mark which is line and which is load if they are not already labeled.
- Connect the green ground wire on the Caseta dimmer to the bare copper or green ground wire in the box using the included wire connector.
- Connect the black wire on the dimmer to the hot (line) wire and the blue wire to the load wire using wire connectors. Tuck the connections neatly into the box.
- Secure the dimmer to the electrical box with the provided screws. Attach the included wallplate and faceplate.
- Restore power at the circuit breaker. The dimmer's LED bar should illuminate, confirming it has power.
App Pairing
Open the Lutron Caseta app, tap the menu, and select "Add Device." Choose "Dimmers and Switches" and follow the prompts. The app will instruct you to press the top button on the dimmer to enter pairing mode. The bridge communicates with the dimmer using Clear Connect RF technology, which provides reliable wireless control without relying on your home Wi-Fi network. Once paired, name the dimmer and assign it to a room for easy organization.
Smart Home Integration Tips
After pairing, the dimmer is automatically available through any voice assistants linked to your Caseta bridge, including Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. You can set up fade-on and fade-off rates in the Lutron app to create smooth lighting transitions. Create schedules for the dimmer to automatically adjust lighting based on time of day, or use geofencing to turn lights on when you arrive home.
Quick Troubleshooting
If your lights flicker or buzz after installation, verify that your bulbs appear on Lutron's compatible bulb list. Some LED bulbs require adjusting the low-end trim on the dimmer. Access this by pressing and holding the bottom button on the dimmer for about six seconds until the lights begin to dim, then release when the flickering stops. If the dimmer does not pair, move within 30 feet of the Smart Bridge and ensure no other pairing operation is in progress.
