What You'll Need
- Lux GEO Smart Thermostat
- Lux Products app (iOS or Android)
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Wire labels or tape
Before You Start
The Lux GEO is built around a simple idea: use your phone's location to automatically manage your thermostat. Its geofencing feature adjusts the temperature when you leave and returns to your comfort setting when you head home. The thermostat works with most 24V HVAC systems, including conventional furnaces (gas, electric, oil) and heat pumps. It does not support high-voltage baseboard heaters (120V/240V) or millivolt systems.
C-Wire Notes
The Lux GEO requires a C-wire for power. If your current thermostat cable does not have one, you will need to run a new wire or install an add-a-wire kit. Before buying, pull your current thermostat off the wall and check for a wire on the C terminal. If you only have four wires (R, W, Y, G), you will need to add a C-wire before installation.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Turn off HVAC at the breaker. Confirm the system is off by checking the old thermostat.
- Remove the old thermostat. Photograph wiring and label each wire with the terminal letter.
- Remove the old wall plate.
- Mount the GEO backplate with included screws. Thread wires through the center opening.
- Connect wires to matching terminals. The GEO has standard terminals (R, C, W, Y, G, O/B). Secure each wire in the screw terminal.
- Snap the thermostat onto the backplate.
- Restore power at the breaker.
- Download the Lux Products app, create an account, and follow the setup wizard to connect to Wi-Fi and configure your system type and preferences.
HVAC Compatibility Notes
The Lux GEO supports conventional single-stage heating and cooling systems, as well as single-stage heat pumps with auxiliary heat. It is not designed for multi-stage systems. If you have a 2-stage furnace or multi-zone system, you may want to look at the Lux Kono instead. For heat pump systems, connect the O/B wire and configure the reversing valve during app setup.
Smart Home Integration
The Lux GEO works with Amazon Alexa for voice control. Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit are not supported on this model. Alexa integration lets you adjust the temperature, change modes, and check the current reading by voice. The primary control interface is the Lux Products app, which handles scheduling, geofencing, and temperature adjustments. IFTTT integration is not available. If you need broader smart home platform support, consider the Lux Kono instead.
Energy Saving Features
- Geofencing is the GEO's signature feature. It tracks your phone's GPS and automatically switches between home and away temperatures when you come and go. If multiple family members use the app, the thermostat stays in home mode until everyone has left
- Learning algorithm observes your manual adjustments over the first few days and begins to predict your preferences
- 7-day scheduling provides manual programming with multiple time blocks per day
- Energy tracking in the app shows runtime data to help identify waste
Troubleshooting
- Geofencing not working: Make sure location services are enabled for the Lux Products app on your phone, and set to "Always" (not just "While Using"). If you have multiple household members, each person should install the app and log into the same account so the thermostat knows when everyone has left.
- Learning feature not adapting: The learning algorithm needs at least a few days of consistent use to start building patterns. Avoid making lots of random temperature changes in the first week, as this gives the algorithm mixed signals. Stick to your normal routine and let it learn.
- No power after installation: The GEO requires a C-wire. Check that the C-wire is connected at both the thermostat terminal and the furnace control board. A loose connection at either end will prevent the thermostat from powering on.
- Won't connect to Wi-Fi: The GEO only supports 2.4GHz networks. If your router broadcasts combined bands, temporarily create a dedicated 2.4GHz SSID. Also check that the password does not contain unusual characters that might not be available on the thermostat's input method.
- HVAC not responding: Verify the system type is correctly configured in the app. If you selected "heat pump" when you have a conventional furnace (or the reverse), the thermostat will send the wrong signals. Reconfigure the system type in the app settings.
- Factory reset: Access the reset option through the thermostat's on-screen menu. This clears Wi-Fi, schedules, and learned data.
