What You'll Need
- Lux Kono Smart Thermostat
- Lux Kono app (iOS or Android)
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Wire labels or tape
Before You Start
The Lux Kono stands out with its interchangeable decorative faceplates, letting you match the thermostat to your wall color or decor. Beyond the looks, it is a capable smart thermostat that works with most 24V HVAC systems including conventional furnaces, heat pumps, and multi-stage systems. It supports up to 2 stages of heating, 2 stages of cooling, and heat pump with auxiliary heat. It does not work with line-voltage (120V/240V) baseboard systems or millivolt systems.
C-Wire Considerations
The Lux Kono can operate without a C-wire for basic conventional systems, drawing power from the R wire during HVAC operation. However, Lux recommends a C-wire for the most reliable performance, especially for heat pump systems. If your system's short cycle times do not provide enough power, you may see intermittent reboots or connection drops. If you have an extra unused wire in your thermostat cable, connect it to the C terminal on both the thermostat and your furnace control board for consistent power.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Turn off HVAC power at the breaker. Confirm the system is off before disconnecting any wires.
- Remove the old thermostat. Pull off the faceplate, photograph the wiring, and label each wire with the terminal letter.
- Remove the old wall plate. The Kono's round design is large enough to cover most old mounting marks.
- Install the Kono base plate using the included screws. Feed the wires through the center hole.
- Connect wires to the matching terminals. The Kono uses standard screw terminals: R, C, W1, W2, Y, Y2, G, O/B. Tighten each wire securely.
- Attach the thermostat display onto the base.
- Snap on your preferred decorative faceplate. The included faceplate rotates on and off easily.
- Restore power at the breaker.
- Download the Lux Kono app, create an account, and follow the setup wizard to connect the thermostat to Wi-Fi and configure your system.
HVAC Compatibility Notes
The Kono supports conventional systems with up to 2 heating stages and 2 cooling stages, heat pumps with auxiliary heat, and humidity control equipment. For heat pump installations, connect the O/B wire and select the correct reversing valve setting in the app. The thermostat auto-detects connected wires during setup and will prompt you to confirm your system configuration. If you have a dual-fuel system (heat pump plus gas furnace), the Kono can manage the switchover based on outdoor temperature settings.
Smart Home Integration
The Lux Kono works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. HomeKit support means you can add it to the Apple Home app, build automations with other HomeKit devices, and control it with Siri. Alexa and Google integration lets you adjust the temperature and check readings by voice. The Kono also supports geofencing through the Lux app, which adjusts the temperature based on your phone's location. For Home Assistant users, the HomeKit integration provides a clean connection path.
Energy Saving Features
- Geofencing detects when you leave home and automatically sets a more efficient temperature
- 7-day scheduling lets you program different temperatures for each day with multiple time periods
- Smart Recovery pre-starts heating or cooling so the target temperature is reached at the scheduled time
- Vacation mode holds a single energy-saving temperature for a set date range
- Usage data in the app helps you track HVAC runtime patterns
Troubleshooting
- Swapping faceplates: Rotate the decorative faceplate counterclockwise to remove it. The new faceplate slides on and rotates clockwise to lock. Make sure the faceplate is aligned with the flat edge at the bottom before rotating.
- No power or thermostat keeps restarting: If you do not have a C-wire, the Kono may struggle to maintain power. Check whether there is an unused wire in your thermostat cable that can serve as a C-wire. If not, a third-party add-a-wire kit or having a technician run a new cable are your options.
- Won't connect to Wi-Fi: The Kono supports 2.4GHz networks only. If your router auto-steers devices between bands, temporarily disable band steering or create a separate 2.4GHz SSID. Make sure your phone is on the same network during the setup process.
- HVAC not responding: Verify the system type configuration matches your actual equipment. If the fan runs but heating or cooling does not start, check the W (heat) and Y (cool) wire connections at the thermostat and at the furnace.
- HomeKit not pairing: Make sure your Apple Home hub (Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad) is online and on the same Wi-Fi network as the thermostat. Try removing and re-adding the thermostat in Apple Home if pairing fails.
- Factory reset: Access the reset option through the Lux Kono app or through the device's on-screen menu. A full reset clears schedules, Wi-Fi, and account pairing.
