What's in the Box

Your Nanoleaf Essentials Outdoor String Lights (15m) package includes the 15-meter outdoor string light strand with integrated LED bulbs, a controller unit, a power adapter rated for outdoor use, and a quick start guide. The string lights feature individually addressable RGBWW LEDs at each bulb position, allowing you to set different colors on each bulb or run dynamic animated scenes across the entire strand. The lights carry an IP65 weatherproof rating, making them suitable for year-round outdoor use in rain, snow, and heat.

Prerequisites

Before installing the outdoor string lights, ensure you have:

  • An outdoor GFCI-protected power outlet within reach of the power adapter cable
  • Mounting hooks, clips, or guide wire to hang the string lights along your desired path (patio, deck railing, fence line, or tree canopy)
  • The Nanoleaf app installed on your smartphone
  • A Thread border router recommended for best connectivity (Apple HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, or other Thread-capable device)
  • Bluetooth enabled on your phone for initial pairing

The Nanoleaf Essentials Outdoor String Lights use Thread and Bluetooth connectivity, consistent with the rest of the Essentials product line. Thread provides mesh networking that extends range through other Thread-enabled devices on your network.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Plan your hanging route before connecting anything. Measure the distance along the path where you intend to hang the lights to confirm the 15-meter length is sufficient. The controller end with the power adapter should be near the outlet.
  2. Install mounting hooks, screw-in guide wire clips, or adhesive hooks along your planned route. Space them every 2-3 feet to prevent sagging. For railings, use zip ties or railing clips at regular intervals.
  3. Drape the string lights along the hooks or clips, starting from the controller end near the power outlet. Avoid pulling the strand taut, as slight slack accommodates wind movement and temperature expansion.
  4. Connect the power adapter to the controller and plug it into the outdoor GFCI outlet. The lights should illuminate briefly upon receiving power.
  5. Open the Nanoleaf app and tap "Add Device." Select "Essentials Outdoor String Lights" from the product list.
  6. The app will use Bluetooth to locate the controller. Once found, follow the prompts to complete pairing and connect the lights to your Thread network if available.
  7. Name the string lights and assign them to an outdoor area or room in the app.

App Pairing and Scene Selection

The Nanoleaf app provides a wide selection of animated and static scenes designed for outdoor use, including holiday themes, party modes, and subtle ambient glows. You can customize colors for each bulb individually or let scenes animate across the strand. The circadian scheduling feature can automatically adjust the lights to warm white in the evening and turn off at a set time.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The string lights work with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. Create automations that turn the lights on at sunset and off at midnight, or activate them when you unlock your back door using a smart lock. For holiday season use, save custom color scenes in the Nanoleaf app so you can quickly switch between everyday and festive lighting.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the lights do not turn on, verify that the GFCI outlet has not tripped. Press the "Reset" button on the outlet to restore power. If individual bulbs appear dim or discolored, check the connection at the controller and try power cycling the system. If the Nanoleaf app cannot find the lights, ensure Bluetooth is enabled and you are within range of the controller unit. For Thread connectivity issues, verify your border router is online and within reasonable range of the outdoor installation. During extreme cold, battery-backed Thread devices may temporarily reduce performance, but the string lights operate on continuous power and should not be affected.
