What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue Appear Outdoor Wall Light
  • A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
  • A suitable exterior wall near a power source
  • Basic tools: drill, screwdriver, level, pencil
  • Wall anchors appropriate for your wall material (masonry, wood, or siding)
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
  • An electrician (recommended for hardwiring, unless you are comfortable with electrical work)

Important Safety Note

The Hue Appear is a hardwired outdoor fixture that connects directly to your home's electrical wiring. Unlike Hue bulbs that screw into existing fixtures, this product requires installation at a junction box. If you are not experienced with electrical work, hire a licensed electrician to install the fixture. Always turn off the circuit breaker before working with wiring.

Step 1: Turn Off Power

Go to your electrical panel and switch off the breaker that controls the outdoor circuit where you will install the Appear. Use a voltage tester at the junction box to confirm the power is off before touching any wires.

Step 2: Mount the Base Plate

  1. Hold the mounting plate against the wall over the junction box.
  2. Use a level to ensure it is straight.
  3. Mark the screw hole locations with a pencil.
  4. Drill pilot holes and insert wall anchors if mounting to masonry or brick.
  5. Secure the mounting plate to the wall with the included screws.

Step 3: Connect the Wiring

  1. Thread the fixture's wires through the mounting plate.
  2. Connect the fixture wires to your home's supply wires using wire nuts: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), and green or bare copper to the ground wire.
  3. Carefully tuck the wire connections into the junction box.
  4. Attach the fixture to the mounting plate using the provided hardware.

Step 4: Restore Power and Test

Turn the circuit breaker back on. The Appear should illuminate with a warm white light. The fixture casts light both upward and downward along the wall, creating an elegant architectural lighting effect. If the light does not turn on, turn off the breaker and double-check your wire connections.

Step 5: Pair with Your Hue Bridge

  1. Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
  2. Tap Add Light and let the app search.
  3. The Appear will appear in the search results. Tap to pair it.
  4. Assign it to an outdoor room such as "Front Porch" or "Entryway."

Step 6: Customize Colors and Scenes

The Appear supports the full White and Color Ambiance range. Its up-and-down light pattern looks especially striking with color. Try these setups:

  • Warm white wash: A classic 2700K warm glow for everyday evening lighting.
  • Architectural accent: Use a subtle cool blue or amber to highlight the texture of brick or stone walls.
  • Holiday colors: Set seasonal colors without needing to change fixtures or add temporary decorations.

Step 7: Set Up Automations

Wall-mounted outdoor lights are essential for security and curb appeal. Set up automations to turn the Appear on at sunset, brighten when motion is detected (paired with a Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor), and dim late at night to save energy while maintaining a welcoming glow.

Tips

  • The Appear is rated IP44 for outdoor use, protecting against splashing water from any direction. It is suitable for covered and exposed wall locations.
  • The fixture produces approximately 1200 lumens with its dual up-and-down beam pattern.
  • Since this is hardwired, the light receives constant power. Leave the circuit breaker on at all times and use the Hue app or automations for control.
  • If replacing an existing outdoor fixture, make sure the junction box behind the old fixture is compatible with the Appear's mounting plate.
  • The Appear communicates via Zigbee to the Bridge. Place a Hue bulb in a nearby indoor fixture to strengthen the mesh network if the wall fixture is far from the Bridge.
