What You Will Need
- Philips Hue Daylo Outdoor Wall Light
- A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
- A suitable exterior wall with an existing junction box
- Basic tools: drill, screwdriver, level, pencil, wire nuts
- Wall anchors appropriate for your wall material
- A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
- An electrician (recommended if you are not experienced with electrical wiring)
Important Safety Note
The Hue Daylo is a hardwired outdoor wall fixture that connects directly to your home's electrical system through a junction box. Turn off the circuit breaker before beginning installation. If you are not confident in your ability to work with household wiring, hire a licensed electrician.
Step 1: Turn Off Power
Locate the breaker that controls the outdoor lighting circuit and switch it off. Verify the power is off by using a non-contact voltage tester at the junction box where you will install the Daylo.
Step 2: Remove the Existing Fixture (If Applicable)
If you are replacing an existing outdoor light fixture, remove it by unscrewing the mounting hardware and disconnecting the wires. Keep the junction box intact, as you will use it for the Daylo.
Step 3: Attach the Mounting Bracket
- Hold the Daylo's mounting bracket against the wall, aligned with the junction box.
- Use a level to ensure the bracket is straight.
- Mark the screw positions with a pencil.
- Drill pilot holes and insert wall anchors if needed.
- Secure the mounting bracket to the wall with the provided screws.
Step 4: Connect the Wiring
- Feed the fixture's wires through the mounting bracket.
- Connect the wires: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), and green or bare copper to ground.
- Secure each connection with a wire nut and wrap with electrical tape for extra security.
- Push the connected wires carefully into the junction box.
Step 5: Mount the Fixture
Align the Daylo fixture with the mounting bracket and secure it using the provided hardware. Tighten all screws firmly but avoid over-tightening, which could crack the fixture housing. The Daylo features a sleek, stainless steel design that provides a modern, clean look on contemporary home exteriors.
Step 6: Restore Power and Test
Turn the circuit breaker back on. The Daylo should illuminate immediately. It projects light outward from the wall with a wide beam pattern, providing excellent illumination for entryways, porches, and garage areas. If the fixture does not turn on, switch the breaker off and recheck your wire connections.
Step 7: Pair with Your Hue Bridge
- Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
- Tap Add Light and let the app search.
- When the Daylo appears, tap to pair it with your Bridge.
- Assign it to a room like "Front Door" or "Garage."
Step 8: Configure Lighting and Automations
The Daylo supports the full White and Color Ambiance range. Set up practical lighting configurations:
- Evening welcome: Warm white (2700K) at 80% brightness triggered at sunset.
- Security alert: Bright white at 100% triggered by a Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor.
- Late night: Dim warm white at 15% from midnight to dawn for subtle guidance lighting.
- Holiday accents: Use colors to match the season without adding temporary lights.
Tips
- The Daylo is rated IP44 for outdoor use, providing protection against rain and splashing water from all directions.
- The stainless steel housing resists corrosion, making it a durable choice for coastal or humid climates.
- Since this is hardwired, the fixture has constant power. Use the Hue app and automations for all on/off and dimming control. Never switch the breaker off as your primary control method.
- If installing on a wall far from the Hue Bridge, ensure there is at least one other Hue device in between to extend the Zigbee mesh network.
- The Daylo is also available in different finishes and styles. Make sure the model you purchased matches your home's exterior aesthetic.
