What You Will Need
- Ring Smart Lighting Pathlight (2-Pack)
- Ring Smart Lighting Bridge (required for app control and smart features)
- Ring app (iOS or Android) with an active account
- 4 D-cell batteries (2 per pathlight, not included)
- A walkway, garden path, or driveway to illuminate
Step 1: Set Up the Ring Smart Lighting Bridge
Before installing the pathlights, you must have a Ring Smart Lighting Bridge connected and online. The Bridge enables communication between your Ring Smart Lighting devices and the Ring app using a proprietary wireless protocol. If you have not already set up the Bridge, refer to the Bridge setup guide first.
Step 2: Insert Batteries
- Twist the top light housing counterclockwise to separate it from the stake.
- Open the battery compartment on the light housing.
- Insert two D-cell batteries per pathlight, following the polarity markings inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment. The LED will flash briefly to confirm power.
Step 3: Add Pathlights to the Ring App
- Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
- Select Smart Lighting, then choose Pathlight.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. The app will search for the pathlight through your Smart Lighting Bridge.
- When the light is discovered, name it and assign it to a group (e.g., "Front Walkway" or "Garden Path").
- Repeat for the second pathlight.
Step 4: Install the Pathlights
- Choose locations along your path spaced approximately six to eight feet apart for even illumination.
- Push the stake firmly into the ground until the base of the light housing is at the desired height. The stake has depth markings to help you achieve consistent heights.
- Twist the light housing clockwise onto the stake to secure it.
- Ensure the motion sensor on each pathlight faces the area you want to detect movement.
Step 5: Configure Smart Features
With the Ring Smart Lighting Bridge connected, you can control the pathlights through the Ring app:
- Motion Settings — Adjust sensitivity and range for the built-in motion sensor. Each pathlight can detect motion up to approximately 15 feet away.
- Linked Devices — Link the pathlights to Ring cameras so they turn on when a camera detects motion, and vice versa.
- Groups — Create a lighting group so all pathlights along a walkway turn on together when one detects motion.
- Schedules — Set the pathlights to turn on at dusk and off at dawn, or create custom schedules.
- Brightness — Adjust brightness levels in the app to balance illumination and battery life.
Tips for Best Performance
- D-cell batteries typically last about one year under normal use. Reducing brightness extends battery life.
- The pathlights are weather-resistant and designed for year-round outdoor use.
- For best motion detection, avoid placing pathlights near heat sources like dryer vents or HVAC units, which can cause false triggers.
- Grouping pathlights with Ring cameras creates an effective perimeter lighting system that activates as visitors or intruders approach your home.
