What You Will Need

  • Ring Smart Lighting Spotlight (Battery)
  • Ring Smart Lighting Bridge (required for app control and smart features)
  • Ring app (iOS or Android) with an active account
  • 4 D-cell batteries (not included)
  • Phillips screwdriver or drill
  • Mounting screws and anchors (included)

Step 1: Ensure the Smart Lighting Bridge is Online

The Ring Smart Lighting Spotlight requires a Ring Smart Lighting Bridge to communicate with the Ring app and integrate with other Ring devices. If you have not set up the Bridge yet, do so before proceeding. The Bridge plugs into a standard outlet indoors and connects to your WiFi network.

Step 2: Insert Batteries

  1. Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the spotlight by pressing the release tab.
  2. Insert four D-cell batteries, following the polarity markings.
  3. Close the battery compartment until it clicks shut.
  4. The spotlight's LED will flash briefly, confirming it has power.

Step 3: Add the Spotlight to the Ring App

  1. Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
  2. Select Smart Lighting, then choose Spotlight.
  3. The app will search for the device through your Smart Lighting Bridge.
  4. Once discovered, name the spotlight and assign it to a location (e.g., "Backyard" or "Side Yard").

Step 4: Mount the Spotlight

  1. Choose a location where you want focused light, such as a dark side yard, above a garage, or along a fence line. Mount it at a height of six to nine feet for optimal motion detection and illumination.
  2. Hold the mounting bracket against the wall and mark the screw holes.
  3. Drill pilot holes if needed, and insert wall anchors for masonry surfaces.
  4. Secure the mounting bracket with the included screws.
  5. Attach the spotlight to the bracket and adjust the angle so the light is aimed at the area you want to illuminate.
  6. Adjust the motion sensor angle independently — the sensor head pivots to let you point it at the desired detection zone.

Step 5: Configure Settings

Through the Ring app, customize the spotlight's behavior:

  • Motion Sensitivity — Adjust how sensitive the built-in passive infrared (PIR) sensor is to movement.
  • Motion Zones — Set detection zones to focus on specific areas and ignore others.
  • Brightness — Choose a brightness level that provides adequate illumination without draining batteries excessively.
  • Linked Devices — Link the spotlight to Ring cameras. When one device detects motion, all linked devices activate together.
  • Light Groups — Group multiple Smart Lighting devices so they turn on simultaneously.
  • Duration — Set how long the spotlight stays on after detecting motion (typically 30 seconds to 5 minutes).

Tips for Best Performance

  • Battery life is approximately one year with average use. Reducing brightness and motion sensitivity extends battery life.
  • The spotlight outputs up to 400 lumens, suitable for illuminating a walkway, driveway section, or entry point.
  • Avoid pointing the motion sensor at heat sources, roadways with passing cars, or areas with heavy tree movement to reduce false activations.
  • For added security, link the spotlight with a Ring camera so that motion triggers both light and recording simultaneously.
