What You Will Need

  • Ring Smart Lighting Steplight (Battery)
  • Ring Smart Lighting Bridge (required for app control and smart features)
  • Ring app (iOS or Android) with an active account
  • 3 AA batteries (not included)
  • Phillips screwdriver or drill
  • Mounting screws (included)

Step 1: Ensure the Smart Lighting Bridge is Online

The Ring Smart Lighting Steplight communicates with the Ring app through the Ring Smart Lighting Bridge. The Bridge must be set up and connected to your WiFi network before you can add the steplight. If you have not done this yet, set up the Bridge first.

Step 2: Insert Batteries

  1. Open the battery compartment on the back of the steplight by removing the cover screw with a Phillips screwdriver.
  2. Insert three AA batteries, following the polarity markings inside the compartment.
  3. Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw.
  4. The light will flash briefly to confirm it has power.

Step 3: Add the Steplight to the Ring App

  1. Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
  2. Select Smart Lighting, then choose Steplight.
  3. The app will communicate with your Smart Lighting Bridge to discover the device.
  4. Once found, name the steplight and assign it to a location (e.g., "Front Steps" or "Deck Stairs").

Step 4: Mount the Steplight

The steplight is designed to be mounted on vertical surfaces near stairs, steps, or low walls to cast light downward and illuminate walking paths.

  1. Choose a mounting location on the riser of a step, a low wall, a deck post, or the side of a porch. Mount it approximately six to twelve inches above the surface you want to illuminate.
  2. Hold the steplight against the surface and mark the two screw hole positions.
  3. Drill pilot holes if necessary. For wood surfaces like decks, you can screw directly into the material. For masonry, use wall anchors.
  4. Secure the steplight with the included screws.
  5. Ensure the motion sensor window at the top of the light faces outward toward the area where you want to detect movement.

Step 5: Configure Settings in the Ring App

  • Motion Sensitivity — Adjust how far away the steplight detects movement. Lower sensitivity for high-traffic areas to conserve battery.
  • Brightness — Set the light output level. Lower brightness extends battery life significantly.
  • Light Duration — Choose how long the light stays on after motion is detected.
  • Linked Devices — Link the steplight with Ring cameras or other Smart Lighting devices for coordinated activation.
  • Groups — Add multiple steplights to a group so all lights on a staircase activate together when any one detects motion.
  • Schedules — Set the steplight to only activate during nighttime hours to save battery.

Tips for Best Performance

  • AA batteries typically last six months to one year depending on motion frequency and brightness settings.
  • Install steplights on every other step for adequate stairway illumination, or on every step for maximum visibility.
  • The steplight is weather-resistant and suitable for year-round outdoor use.
  • For the best lighting effect, mount the light so it casts a downward wash across the step surface rather than shining into the eyes of someone walking up the stairs.
