What You Will Need
- Ring Solar Steplight
- Ring Smart Lighting Bridge (required for app control and smart features)
- Ring app (iOS or Android) with an active account
- Phillips screwdriver or drill
- Mounting screws (included)
- An outdoor location that receives direct sunlight
Step 1: Ensure the Smart Lighting Bridge is Online
The Ring Solar Steplight requires a Ring Smart Lighting Bridge to communicate with the Ring app and integrate with other Ring devices. Confirm your Bridge is plugged in, connected to WiFi, and showing as online in the Ring app before proceeding.
Step 2: Pre-Charge the Steplight
The Solar Steplight has a built-in rechargeable battery powered by the integrated solar panel. Before mounting, place the steplight in direct sunlight for at least eight hours to build up an initial charge. The solar panel is located on the top face of the unit.
Step 3: Add the Steplight to the Ring App
- Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
- Select Smart Lighting, then choose Solar Steplight.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. The app will search for the steplight through your Smart Lighting Bridge.
- Once discovered, name the steplight and assign it to a location (e.g., "Patio Steps" or "Deck Stairs").
Step 4: Mount the Steplight
- Choose a mounting location on the vertical riser of a step, a low wall, a deck post, or the side of a porch. The steplight casts light downward to illuminate walking surfaces.
- Position the steplight so the solar panel on top receives direct sunlight during the day. Avoid deeply shaded areas under overhangs or dense tree cover.
- Hold the steplight against the surface and mark the screw hole locations.
- Drill pilot holes if needed. For wood decks, screw directly into the surface. For masonry, use wall anchors.
- Secure the steplight with the included screws.
Step 5: Configure Settings
- Motion Sensitivity — Adjust how far away the built-in sensor detects movement. Lower sensitivity helps conserve battery and reduces false activations.
- Brightness — Set an appropriate brightness level. Lower brightness significantly extends the battery's ability to last through the night.
- Duration — Choose how long the light stays on after detecting motion.
- Linked Devices — Link the steplight with Ring cameras or other Smart Lighting devices for coordinated activation.
- Groups — Add multiple steplights to a group so all lights on a staircase activate together when any one detects motion.
Tips for Best Performance
- The Solar Steplight needs several hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain enough charge for nighttime operation.
- During winter months with shorter days and less intense sunlight, consider reducing brightness and motion sensitivity to conserve battery.
- Clean the solar panel regularly to remove dirt, leaves, and pollen that can reduce charging efficiency.
- Install steplights on every other step for adequate stairway illumination. For maximum visibility, install one on every step.
- The Solar Steplight is weather-resistant and designed for year-round outdoor use in rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.
- If you notice the steplight is not lighting up at night, check the battery level in the Ring app and verify the solar panel is receiving sufficient sunlight.
