What You Will Need
- Ring Wired Doorbell
- Ring app (iOS or Android) with an active account
- Existing doorbell wiring (8-24 VAC transformer)
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network
- Phillips screwdriver
- Drill with a small bit (for pilot holes)
- Non-contact voltage tester (recommended)
Step 1: Verify Your Existing Wiring
The Ring Wired Doorbell requires hardwired power and cannot run on battery. Check that your home has existing doorbell wiring with a transformer rated between 8 and 24 VAC. The Wired Doorbell has lower power requirements than the Pro models, making it compatible with a wider range of transformers. If you are unsure about your transformer, check the label on it, usually located near your electrical panel or in a utility closet.
Step 2: Turn Off Power
- Turn off the circuit breaker that controls your existing doorbell.
- Use a non-contact voltage tester at the doorbell location to confirm the wires are de-energized.
Step 3: Remove the Old Doorbell
- Unscrew your existing doorbell from the wall.
- Disconnect the two wires from the back of the old doorbell.
- Keep the wires accessible — tape them to the wall temporarily if needed so they do not retract into the hole.
Step 4: Mount the Ring Wired Doorbell
- Hold the included mounting bracket against the wall next to your door at approximately four feet above the ground.
- Use a level to ensure it is straight, then mark the screw holes.
- Drill pilot holes and insert wall anchors if mounting on brick, stucco, or masonry.
- Thread the doorbell wires through the bracket.
- Secure the bracket to the wall with the included screws.
- Connect the two doorbell wires to the screw terminals on the back of the Ring Wired Doorbell. The wires are not polarity-sensitive, so either wire can go to either terminal.
- Press the doorbell onto the bracket until it clicks into place.
- Secure it with the security screw on the bottom using the included tool.
Step 5: Restore Power and Set Up in the Ring App
- Turn the circuit breaker back on. The doorbell's front light will begin flashing as it boots up.
- Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
- Select Doorbells, then choose Wired Doorbell.
- Scan the QR code on the back of the doorbell.
- Follow the prompts to connect the doorbell to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network.
- Name the doorbell and assign it to a location.
Step 6: Configure Motion Settings
- Motion Zones — Set up zones in the Ring app to define which areas trigger motion alerts.
- Motion Sensitivity — Adjust the sensitivity slider to minimize false alerts from sidewalk traffic or passing cars.
- Notification Preferences — Choose whether to receive alerts for motion events, button presses, or both.
Tips for Best Performance
- The Ring Wired Doorbell records 1080p HD video with two-way audio and night vision.
- Since it is hardwired, you never need to charge a battery.
- The doorbell is the most compact Ring doorbell model, making it suitable for narrow door frames and smaller mounting areas.
- A Ring Protect subscription is required to save video recordings and access features like person detection. Without a subscription, you can view live video and receive alerts.
- The doorbell works with your existing indoor chime. If the chime does not ring when the button is pressed, check the wiring connections and ensure the chime is compatible.
