What's in the Box
The Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt (Z-Wave) package includes: the Connect deadbolt lock (exterior touchscreen keypad and interior assembly), a deadbolt latch, a strike plate with reinforcement plate, mounting hardware, two backup keys, a door handing tool, and the installation guide. Confirm all parts are present and in good condition before beginning installation.
Prerequisites
Have the following ready before starting:
- A door with standard deadbolt preparation — 2-1/8 inch bore hole and 1-inch edge bore
- A Phillips head screwdriver
- A Z-Wave compatible smart home hub, such as Samsung SmartThings, Hubitat, Ring Alarm, or Wink (the Schlage Connect requires a hub for remote access and smart home features)
- The Schlage Home app installed on your iOS or Android phone for initial setup, plus your hub's app for ongoing control
- Four AA batteries (usually included)
Step-by-Step Setup
- Remove the old deadbolt: Unscrew and remove the existing deadbolt lock from both sides of the door. Pull out the old latch bolt from the edge of the door.
- Install the strike plate: Mount the Schlage strike plate and reinforcement plate to the door frame using the included long screws. These screws reach into the structural framing for added security against forced entry.
- Insert the latch bolt: Slide the deadbolt latch into the edge bore hole with the faceplate oriented correctly and the "UP" label facing up. Secure it with the provided screws.
- Install the exterior keypad assembly: Feed the wire connector from the exterior touchscreen through the bore hole. Position the exterior assembly flush against the outside of the door.
- Mount the interior assembly: Connect the cable to the interior assembly, then position the interior mounting plate over the bore hole. Tighten the mounting screws evenly, being careful not to overtighten.
- Insert the batteries: Place four AA batteries in the battery compartment on the interior side. The touchscreen will briefly illuminate to confirm the lock is powered.
- Test the lock: Operate the deadbolt using the interior thumbturn, the touchscreen keypad, and the backup key. Verify smooth operation and proper alignment with the strike plate.
- Pair with your Z-Wave hub: Put your Z-Wave hub into inclusion mode (pairing mode) using your hub's app. On the Schlage Connect, enter your programming code followed by 0, then press the Schlage button. The lock will attempt to join the Z-Wave network. The hub's app should confirm the lock has been added as a device.
- Configure access codes: Use the Schlage Home app or your Z-Wave hub's app to set up user codes. The Schlage Connect supports up to 30 unique access codes, which can be assigned to different family members, guests, or temporary visitors.
Smart Home Integration Tips
Because the Schlage Connect uses Z-Wave, it relies on a compatible hub for all smart home functionality. Once paired with your hub, you can integrate the lock with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and other platforms through your hub's ecosystem. For example, with SmartThings, you can create automations that lock the door at a set time each night, or unlock it when your phone's geofence detects you arriving home. The Z-Wave protocol also supports mesh networking — other Z-Wave devices in your home (like light switches and outlets) extend the lock's signal range. For the best Z-Wave performance, place a Z-Wave repeater device within 20 feet of the lock if your hub is far away.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the lock won't pair with your Z-Wave hub, first exclude the lock by putting the hub into exclusion mode and entering the programming code followed by 0 on the lock. Then attempt inclusion again. If the bolt is stiff, loosen the mounting screws slightly and check that the door is properly aligned with the strike plate. If the touchscreen is unresponsive, remove the batteries for 10 seconds and reinstall them. For a full factory reset, enter the programming code, then press the Schlage button, then enter 0 twice. The lock will reset all codes and Z-Wave associations. After resetting, you will need to pair it with your hub again from scratch.
