What's in the Box
Your Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt package includes: the Encode deadbolt lock (exterior touchscreen keypad and interior assembly), a deadbolt latch, a strike plate with reinforcement plate, mounting screws and hardware, two backup keys, a door handing tool, and the installation guide. Verify all components are present before you begin.
Prerequisites
Gather these items and confirm these conditions before starting:
- A door with standard deadbolt preparation — a 2-1/8 inch bore hole and a 1-inch edge bore
- A Phillips head screwdriver (no drilling required on a standard prepped door)
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network with the password ready (the Schlage Encode connects directly to WiFi with no hub needed)
- The Schlage Home app on your iOS or Android smartphone
- Four AA batteries (typically included with the lock)
Step-by-Step Setup
- Remove the existing deadbolt: Unscrew the interior and exterior assemblies of your current deadbolt and remove them from the door. Pull out the old latch from the edge of the door.
- Install the new strike plate: Secure the Schlage strike plate and reinforcement plate to the door frame with the included long screws. The reinforcement plate provides added resistance against forced entry by anchoring deep into the frame stud.
- Insert the deadbolt latch: Slide the deadbolt latch into the edge bore hole. Make sure the latch face is properly oriented with the "UP" marking facing up. Secure it with the provided screws.
- Mount the exterior assembly: Feed the cable connector from the exterior touchscreen keypad through the bore hole and align the assembly flush against the door's exterior surface.
- Attach the interior assembly: Connect the cable from the exterior assembly to the interior component. Align the interior mounting plate over the bore hole and tighten the two screws evenly. Avoid overtightening, which can make the bolt difficult to operate.
- Install the batteries: Insert four AA batteries into the interior battery compartment. The Schlage logo on the touchscreen will illuminate briefly to confirm the lock has power.
- Test the lock: Check that the deadbolt extends and retracts smoothly using both the interior thumbturn and the touchscreen keypad. Open and close the door to ensure the bolt aligns with the strike plate. Use the backup key to verify the keyed cylinder works as well.
- Connect to the Schlage Home app: Open the Schlage Home app and tap "Add Lock." Select "Schlage Encode" from the device list. The app will guide you through connecting the lock to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network. No additional hub or bridge is required — the Encode connects directly to your router.
- Set up access codes: Use the Schlage Home app to create personalized access codes for household members, guests, and service personnel. You can set codes as permanent, temporary, or scheduled to specific times of day.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The Schlage Encode integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and select smart home platforms through its built-in WiFi. Link your Schlage account in the Alexa or Google Home app to enable voice commands such as "Alexa, lock the front door" or "Hey Google, is the back door locked?" The Encode also works with Amazon Key for in-home delivery and integrates with Ring doorbells and cameras so you can create routines — for example, locking the door automatically when your Ring alarm is armed. For remote access, ensure your Schlage Home app is logged in and the lock is connected to WiFi to lock, unlock, and monitor your door from anywhere.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the lock won't pair with the app, confirm you are connecting to a 2.4 GHz WiFi network, as the Encode does not support 5 GHz bands. If the deadbolt feels stiff or doesn't extend fully, check door alignment and slightly loosen the mounting screws. If the touchscreen becomes unresponsive, remove and reinstall the batteries. To factory reset the Schlage Encode, press and hold the Schlage button for 10 seconds until you hear a long beep, then set up the lock again through the app. Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator appears to avoid getting locked out.
