What You'll Need

  • Sensi Touch 2 Smart Thermostat
  • Sensi app (iOS or Android)
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Labels or tape for wire marking

Before You Start

The Sensi Touch 2 is compatible with most 24V HVAC systems, including conventional gas and electric furnaces, heat pumps (with aux/emergency heat), and systems with humidifier or dehumidifier accessories. It does not work with line-voltage (120V/240V) or millivolt systems. Run the compatibility checker at sensi.com/compatibility and enter your current wiring to confirm before installation.

C-Wire Flexibility

One of the Sensi Touch 2's strengths is that it does not require a C-wire for many system configurations. If you have at least a 4-wire setup (R, G, W, Y), the thermostat can draw enough power from the existing wires. However, if you have a heat pump system or experience power issues, adding a C-wire will provide more reliable operation. If your current cable has an unused wire, you can connect it to the C terminal on both the thermostat and the furnace control board.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn off HVAC at the breaker. Do not rely on the thermostat switch alone -- flip the breaker for your heating and cooling system.
  2. Remove your existing thermostat. Pull off the faceplate, take a photo of the wiring, and label each wire with its terminal letter.
  3. Disconnect wires and remove the old wall plate. Keep wires from slipping into the wall by bending the ends slightly or wrapping them around a pencil.
  4. Mount the Sensi Touch 2 base plate using the included hardware. The base has a built-in level to help you get it straight.
  5. Connect wires to the matching terminals. The Sensi uses standard screw terminals. Insert each wire and tighten the screw securely.
  6. Snap the thermostat display onto the base.
  7. Turn power back on at the breaker.
  8. Download the Sensi app and create an account. Follow the in-app setup wizard to add the thermostat, connect it to Wi-Fi, and configure your preferences.

HVAC Compatibility Notes

The Sensi Touch 2 supports up to 2 stages of heating and 2 stages of cooling, plus an auxiliary heat stage for heat pumps. It also has a dedicated terminal for humidifier/dehumidifier control. For heat pump systems, connect your O/B wire and select the correct reversing valve configuration during setup. If you have a dual-fuel system (heat pump plus gas backup), the Sensi supports automatic changeover based on outdoor temperature when configured through the app.

Smart Home Integration

The Sensi Touch 2 works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. For HomeKit, scan the setup code included with the thermostat during Apple Home configuration. The Sensi app also supports geofencing, which adjusts the temperature when you leave and arrive home based on your phone's location. SmartThings integration is available through the Sensi skill, and Home Assistant users can connect via the HomeKit integration or the Sensi cloud API.

Energy Saving Features

  • Geofencing automatically switches between home and away temperatures based on your phone's location, so you never waste energy heating or cooling an empty house
  • Flexible scheduling allows you to set different temperatures for each day, with multiple time blocks per day
  • Smart alerts notify you of extreme temperature or humidity readings, HVAC usage anomalies, and filter replacement reminders
  • Usage reports in the Sensi app track daily and monthly runtime to help you identify savings opportunities
  • HD color display shows real-time temperature, humidity, and current system status at a glance

Troubleshooting

  • No power or blank screen: Check that the breaker is on and that the R wire is connected properly. If you do not have a C-wire and experience intermittent power loss, consider adding one. Also make sure no wires are touching each other behind the base plate, which can cause a short.
  • Won't connect to Wi-Fi: The Sensi Touch 2 only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Make sure you are selecting the correct network during setup. If your router auto-combines 2.4 and 5GHz bands, the thermostat should work, but if it fails, create a dedicated 2.4GHz network temporarily. Also check that your phone is on the same network during the pairing process.
  • HVAC not heating or cooling: In the Sensi app, verify that the correct system type is configured (conventional vs. heat pump). If you recently changed modes from heat to cool or vice versa, some systems have a built-in delay of a few minutes before the compressor starts.
  • HomeKit not working: Remove the thermostat from Apple Home and re-add it using the HomeKit setup code. Make sure your Apple Home hub (Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad) is online and connected to the same network.
  • Factory reset: In the Sensi app, go to the thermostat settings and select Factory Reset. You can also do this directly on the device through the Settings menu.
