What You'll Need

  • Sensi Touch Smart Thermostat
  • Sensi app (iOS or Android)
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Wire labels or tape

Before You Start

The Sensi Touch works with most standard 24V HVAC systems including gas, oil, and electric furnaces, heat pumps with auxiliary heat, and single-stage cooling systems. It does not support high-voltage (120V/240V) systems or millivolt systems. Visit sensi.com/compatibility to verify your specific wiring setup before you start the installation.

C-Wire Notes

The Sensi Touch often works without a C-wire for conventional heating and cooling systems. It draws power from the R wire during HVAC cycles and uses very little energy in standby. However, heat pump systems or setups that cycle infrequently may benefit from a dedicated C-wire. If you find the thermostat losing power or rebooting randomly after installation, adding a C-wire will fix the problem. Check your thermostat cable at the wall -- if there is an extra unused wire in the bundle, you can connect it to C on both the thermostat and furnace control board.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn off your HVAC system at the breaker panel. Confirm the system is off before touching any wires.
  2. Remove the old thermostat. Pull off the faceplate, photograph the wiring, and label every wire with the terminal letter it currently connects to.
  3. Remove the old wall plate. Pull the wires through and keep them from falling into the wall cavity.
  4. Mount the Sensi Touch base plate on the wall using the included screws. Use the built-in level.
  5. Connect wires to labeled terminals. The Sensi Touch uses standard screw terminals. Push each wire in and tighten firmly.
  6. Attach the thermostat to the base plate by pressing it on until it clicks.
  7. Restore power at the breaker.
  8. Open the Sensi app and create an account if you do not have one. Follow the app's setup guide to pair the thermostat, connect to Wi-Fi, and configure your HVAC settings.

HVAC Compatibility Notes

The Sensi Touch supports up to 2 stages of heating and 2 stages of cooling on conventional systems, and single-stage heat pump with auxiliary heat. It includes a terminal for optional equipment like a humidifier or dehumidifier. If you have a heat pump, make sure you connect the O/B wire and select the correct setting during setup. For multi-stage systems, connect W2 and Y2 to their respective terminals.

Smart Home Integration

The Sensi Touch integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. HomeKit requires scanning the provided setup code during pairing. Voice commands let you set temperatures, change modes, and check current readings. Geofencing through the Sensi app can automatically set the thermostat to away mode when everyone leaves and back to home mode on arrival. The Sensi platform also supports IFTTT and integrates with Home Assistant through the HomeKit controller or the Sensi integration.

Energy Saving Features

  • Geofencing detects when you leave and arrive home, adjusting the thermostat automatically without needing manual input
  • 7-day flexible scheduling lets you create custom temperature programs for each day with multiple setpoints
  • Usage reports track how long your HVAC system runs each day so you can spot trends and reduce waste
  • Filter reminders keep your system efficient by notifying you when it is time to change the air filter
  • Smart alerts warn you about extreme temperature swings or unusual HVAC behavior

Troubleshooting

  • No display after installation: Verify the R wire is securely connected and the breaker is on. If the screen flickers or the thermostat reboots, you likely need a C-wire. Check if there is a spare wire in your cable bundle that you can use.
  • Won't connect to Wi-Fi: The Sensi Touch requires a 2.4GHz network. If you only see 5GHz options, check your router settings and enable the 2.4GHz band. During setup, make sure your phone is also on the same 2.4GHz network -- the app uses the phone connection to transfer Wi-Fi credentials.
  • HVAC system not responding: Double-check that you selected the correct system type in the app (conventional vs. heat pump). If the fan runs but heating or cooling does not engage, verify the W and Y wire connections. There is also a built-in compressor protection delay of up to 5 minutes after mode changes.
  • Scheduling not working: Verify that the time zone is set correctly in the Sensi app settings. If the thermostat shows the wrong time, schedules will fire at the wrong times. Also confirm the schedule is set to "On" rather than "Hold" mode.
  • Factory reset: You can reset through the Sensi app under thermostat settings, or directly on the thermostat through the on-device menu.
