What You'll Need

  • Stelpro Maestro Smart Thermostat
  • Stelpro Maestro app (iOS or Android)
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
  • Electric baseboard or convector heaters
  • Wire strippers
  • Wire nuts or push-in connectors
  • Voltage tester

Before You Start

The Stelpro Maestro is a premium line-voltage thermostat for electric heating. It features a high-quality touchscreen and is designed to control 240V (or 120V, depending on the model) baseboard heaters, convectors, and fan-forced heaters. This is a line-voltage device that carries full household voltage, so take appropriate safety precautions. If you are not experienced with electrical work, hire a licensed electrician.

Voltage and Load Check

Confirm the Maestro model you purchased matches your system voltage (120V or 240V). The 240V model is most common for North American baseboard heating. Verify the total connected heater wattage does not exceed the thermostat's rated capacity. The Maestro typically handles up to 3000W at 240V. For heaters that exceed this rating, you will need to install a contactor or relay between the thermostat and the heater circuit.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn off the breaker that feeds your heating circuit. For 240V systems, this will be a double-pole breaker. Use a voltage tester to confirm no power is present on the wires.
  2. Remove the existing thermostat. Identify the LINE wires (incoming from the panel) and LOAD wires (going to the heater). Label them clearly.
  3. Connect wires to the Maestro:
    • LINE wires to LINE terminals
    • LOAD wires to LOAD terminals
    • Follow the wiring diagram included with the thermostat
    • Secure all connections properly
  4. Mount the thermostat onto the electrical box.
  5. Restore power at the breaker.
  6. Download the Stelpro Maestro app, create an account, and add the thermostat. Connect to Wi-Fi and configure your settings.

System Compatibility Notes

The Stelpro Maestro works with resistive electric heating elements including baseboard heaters, wall convectors, fan-forced heaters, and in-floor radiant heating. It pairs especially well with Stelpro's own line of heaters for a matched ecosystem experience. The thermostat does not work with 24V central HVAC systems, heat pumps, or gas furnaces. For each heating zone in your home, you will install one Maestro thermostat. If your heater has a built-in thermostat, set it to the maximum position and let the Maestro handle temperature control.

Smart Home Integration

The Stelpro Maestro integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. Through HomeKit, you can control individual room temperatures from the Apple Home app, set up automations based on time or other HomeKit triggers, and use Siri voice commands. Alexa and Google integration provide standard voice temperature control. The Maestro app is the central hub for managing all your Stelpro thermostats, offering whole-home scheduling and zone grouping. Home Assistant users can integrate via the HomeKit controller or the Stelpro cloud platform.

Energy Saving Features

  • Zone control allows you to heat rooms independently. This is the biggest energy-saving advantage of electric baseboard heating -- you can turn down unused rooms while keeping occupied rooms comfortable
  • Energy cost tracking shows per-thermostat consumption data in the Maestro app, so you know exactly what each zone costs
  • Automated scheduling with multiple time blocks per day lets you reduce heating during sleeping hours and when rooms are unoccupied
  • Away mode drops all thermostats to a minimum maintenance temperature with a single tap or geofencing trigger
  • Weather-adaptive functionality adjusts heating based on outdoor temperature forecasts
  • Smart grouping lets you manage related rooms together, so you can set "Bedrooms" or "Main Floor" to the same schedule with one action

Troubleshooting

  • Safety warning: Always turn off the breaker and test with a voltage tester before working on the thermostat. The Maestro carries 120V or 240V and should never be worked on while energized.
  • Heater does not respond: The most common installation error is reversed LINE and LOAD wires. Turn off the breaker, verify the wires with a voltage tester, and swap them if needed. Also check that the wire connections are tight and fully seated in the terminals.
  • Zone setup in the app: Each Maestro thermostat represents one zone. In the app, you can give each thermostat a room name, assign it to a group, and create a unified schedule for the group. Make sure each thermostat is properly named so you do not accidentally adjust the wrong room.
  • Won't connect to Wi-Fi: The Maestro requires a 2.4GHz network. If your router uses a combined dual-band SSID, try temporarily creating a separate 2.4GHz network for setup. Ensure the thermostat is within Wi-Fi range.
  • Temperature reading inconsistency: Mounting the thermostat directly above a baseboard heater causes it to read the rising hot air rather than the room temperature. If you cannot relocate the thermostat, apply a temperature offset in the app settings to compensate.
  • Factory reset: Use the Stelpro Maestro app to reset the thermostat, or follow the physical reset procedure described in the installation manual (typically involves pressing and holding a button combination on the device).
