What's in the Box

The TP-Link Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug KP401 package includes the outdoor smart plug unit, a short grounded power cord, and a quick start guide. The KP401 is a single-outlet outdoor smart plug with an IP64 weather-resistant rating, designed to handle rain, snow, and dust. It features a protective outlet cover to keep moisture out when nothing is plugged in. No hub is required — it connects directly to your WiFi network.

Prerequisites

Before installing your KP401, make sure you have:

  • A GFCI-protected outdoor power outlet within reach of the KP401's cord
  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network with signal reaching the outdoor outlet location
  • A smartphone with the Kasa Smart app installed (iOS or Android)
  • A TP-Link account created within the Kasa app

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Plug the KP401 into your outdoor GFCI outlet. Make sure the outlet cover on the building can still close over the plug, or use a weather-resistant outlet cover box if the existing cover does not accommodate smart plugs.
  2. Wait about 15 seconds for the plug to power up. The LED indicator on the side of the plug will blink amber and green, indicating it is ready for pairing.
  3. Open the Kasa Smart app and tap the "+" icon to add a device. Select "Smart Plugs" and then choose the KP401 outdoor plug from the list.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions. The app will connect to the plug's temporary WiFi signal, then prompt you to select your home WiFi network and enter the password.
  5. Once connected, name the plug (for example, "Patio Lights" or "Holiday Decorations") and assign it to an outdoor area in the app.
  6. Plug your outdoor device — such as string lights, a fountain pump, or holiday decorations — into the KP401's outlet and close the weather cover over the connection.

App Pairing and Configuration

The Kasa app lets you control the KP401 from anywhere with an internet connection. Set up daily or weekly schedules so your patio lights turn on automatically at sunset and off at midnight. Use countdown timers to run devices for a set duration, such as running a fountain for two hours. The "Away Mode" randomly toggles the plug on and off to simulate activity when you are away. You can also check the plug's status at any time to confirm whether the connected device is currently on or off. For holiday lighting, create seasonal schedules that you can easily enable and disable.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The KP401 works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control. After linking your Kasa account, you can say "Alexa, turn on the patio lights" or "Hey Google, turn off the fountain." Group the plug with other outdoor devices in the Alexa or Google Home app so a single command controls your entire outdoor setup. The plug also supports IFTTT, allowing you to create automations based on triggers like sunrise and sunset times, weather conditions, or your phone's GPS location — for example, automatically turning on the porch lights when you arrive home after dark.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the KP401 does not enter pairing mode, press and hold the power button on the plug for about 5 seconds until the LED blinks amber and green. If the plug connects but goes offline frequently, check your WiFi signal strength at the outdoor location. Outdoor plugs are often at the edge of WiFi range, so a WiFi extender or mesh node near the exterior wall can help maintain a reliable connection. Make sure the GFCI outlet has not tripped — press the "Reset" button on the outlet if the plug suddenly loses power. Always keep the outlet cover closed to prevent water damage during storms.
