What's in the Box

The TP-Link Kasa Smart WiFi Switch HS200 package includes the smart switch unit, a wall plate (faceplate), wire nuts, and an installation guide. The HS200 is a single-pole on/off switch — it does not support dimming. A neutral wire is required in your switch box for installation. The switch connects directly to your WiFi without requiring any hub or bridge device.

Prerequisites

Before beginning the installation, verify the following:

  • A neutral wire is present in your switch box (typically a white wire bundled with other white wires)
  • The switch you are replacing is a standard single-pole switch (one switch controls one light)
  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network is available (the HS200 does not support 5 GHz)
  • The Kasa Smart app is installed on your phone (iOS or Android)
  • A Phillips-head screwdriver and a non-contact voltage tester
  • Basic comfort with household electrical wiring, or access to a licensed electrician

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Switch off the power to the light circuit at your home's circuit breaker panel. Use a non-contact voltage tester at the switch box to confirm the power is completely off before proceeding.
  2. Remove the old switch's faceplate by unscrewing it, then unscrew the mounting screws holding the switch in the box. Gently pull the switch out and take a photo of the wiring connections for reference before disconnecting anything.
  3. Disconnect the wires from the old switch. Identify your wires: line (hot, from the breaker — usually black), load (to the light fixture — usually black or red), neutral (white, bundled in the back of the box), and ground (green or bare copper).
  4. Connect the HS200: attach the black wire on the switch to the line wire, the blue wire to the load wire, the white wire to the neutral wire bundle, and the green wire to the ground wire. Use the included wire nuts to secure each connection firmly.
  5. Push the wires into the electrical box carefully, mount the switch with the included screws, and attach the new wall plate.
  6. Turn the breaker back on. The HS200's LED bar should illuminate, indicating it is powered and ready for setup.

App Pairing and Configuration

Open the Kasa Smart app, tap "+" to add a device, select "Smart Switches," and choose the HS200. Follow the prompts to connect the switch to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Once paired, you can toggle the light on and off remotely from anywhere using the app. Set up schedules to turn lights on at sunset and off at a specific time. The "Away Mode" randomly toggles the switch to simulate occupancy while you are traveling. You can also set countdown timers — for example, turn the porch light off automatically in 30 minutes.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The HS200 integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Microsoft Cortana. After linking your Kasa account in the respective app, use commands like "Alexa, turn on the hallway light" or "Hey Google, turn off the garage light." The physical switch still works normally, so anyone in the household can use it without the app. Group multiple Kasa switches by room in the Kasa app or your voice assistant to control several lights at once with a single command.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the HS200 does not light up after installation, double-check all wire connections, particularly the neutral wire. A loose neutral connection is the most common cause of a dead switch. If the switch powers on but does not connect to WiFi, hold the reset button for 5 seconds to restore factory settings and try pairing again. If the physical switch stops responding but the LED is still on, toggle the breaker off for 10 seconds and back on to reboot the switch. Always ensure your router is broadcasting on 2.4 GHz during the setup process.
