What You'll Need
- Vine TJ-919 Smart Thermostat
- Vine app (iOS or Android)
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Wire labels or tape
Before You Start
The Vine TJ-919 is an upgrade over the TJ-610, featuring a larger touchscreen, humidity display, and more sophisticated scheduling options. It works with most standard 24V HVAC systems including conventional gas and electric furnaces, heat pumps with auxiliary heat, and multi-stage systems. It does not support high-voltage (120V/240V) baseboard heaters or millivolt systems.
C-Wire Requirement
Like the TJ-610, the TJ-919 requires a C-wire for continuous power. This is non-negotiable -- without a C-wire, the thermostat cannot power on or maintain its Wi-Fi connection. Check your existing thermostat wiring before installation. If you only have four wires and no C, you will need to add one using an add-a-wire kit, by running new cable, or by having an HVAC tech wire the C terminal at your furnace control board.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Power off HVAC at the breaker. Make sure the system is completely off before touching any wires.
- Remove the existing thermostat. Photograph the wiring and label every wire with the terminal letter.
- Remove the old wall plate.
- Mount the TJ-919 base plate using the included screws. Feed wires through the center.
- Connect wires to labeled terminals. The TJ-919 has terminals for R, C, W1, W2, Y1, Y2, G, and O/B. Insert each wire and tighten the screw terminal firmly.
- Attach the thermostat to the base plate.
- Turn power back on at the breaker.
- Download the Vine app and follow the setup wizard to add the thermostat, connect to Wi-Fi, and configure your system type and schedule preferences.
HVAC Compatibility Notes
The TJ-919 supports up to 2 stages of heating and 2 stages of cooling for conventional systems, and heat pump operation with auxiliary heat. The multi-stage support is a step up from the TJ-610, making the TJ-919 suitable for larger homes with 2-stage furnaces or multi-speed air conditioners. For heat pump installations, connect the O/B wire and configure the reversing valve setting during app setup. The thermostat displays humidity readings from a built-in sensor, though it does not have a dedicated terminal for controlling a humidifier.
Smart Home Integration
The Vine TJ-919 works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice commands. You can set temperatures, ask for the current reading, and switch modes by voice. Apple HomeKit is not supported. The Vine app provides remote access, scheduling, and system monitoring. While native third-party integrations are limited, Home Assistant users may find community-developed Vine integrations useful for incorporating the thermostat into broader automations.
Energy Saving Features
- Smart scheduling with flexible time blocks for each day of the week
- Humidity monitoring on the display helps you understand comfort conditions and avoid over-conditioning
- Filter reminders track system runtime and alert you when the air filter needs changing
- Energy monitoring in the Vine app shows runtime data so you can track usage patterns
- Auto-changeover automatically switches between heating and cooling as needed, useful in transitional seasons
Troubleshooting
- Blank display: Check the C-wire connection at both the thermostat and furnace control board. The TJ-919 will not power on without a C-wire. Also verify the breaker is on and the R wire is connected securely.
- Won't connect to Wi-Fi: The TJ-919 requires a 2.4GHz network. If your router broadcasts a combined dual-band SSID, try creating a separate 2.4GHz-only network for setup. Verify the password is entered correctly on the touchscreen.
- Humidity reading seems inaccurate: The built-in humidity sensor measures conditions at the thermostat's location. If the thermostat is near a bathroom, kitchen, or exterior door, readings may not reflect the overall room humidity. Allow 30-60 minutes after installation for the sensor to stabilize.
- HVAC not responding: Check the system type configuration in the Vine app. If you selected the wrong type (conventional vs. heat pump), the thermostat sends incorrect signals. For multi-stage systems, verify that W2 and Y2 wires are connected if applicable.
- Schedule not executing at right times: Verify the time zone is set correctly in the Vine app. If the thermostat shows the wrong time, all scheduled temperature changes will happen at the wrong times.
- Factory reset: Navigate to the settings menu on the thermostat's touchscreen and select the factory reset option. This clears all stored settings including Wi-Fi and schedules.
