What You'll Need

  • Wyze Thermostat
  • Wyze app (iOS or Android)
  • Wyze account
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Wire labels or tape
  • C-wire adapter (included in the box)

Before You Start

The Wyze Thermostat is one of the most affordable smart thermostats on the market, and it comes with a C-wire adapter in the box, which is unusual at this price point. It works with most 24V HVAC systems including conventional furnaces, heat pumps (with aux heat), and single- or dual-stage systems. Check compatibility at wyze.com/thermostat before starting. The Wyze does not work with line-voltage systems (120V/240V baseboard heaters) or millivolt systems.

C-Wire Adapter Installation

If your existing thermostat cable does not include a C-wire, the Wyze Thermostat includes a C-wire adapter that installs at your furnace control board. The adapter bridges two of your existing wires to provide power. The Wyze app walks you through the adapter installation with clear diagrams. You will need to open your furnace panel and find the low-voltage control board where your thermostat wires connect. The adapter plugs in between the control board and the existing wires. If you are not comfortable working inside your furnace, this is a quick job for an HVAC technician.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Check compatibility using the Wyze app or website. Enter your current thermostat wiring to confirm the Wyze will work.
  2. Turn off HVAC at the breaker. Confirm the system is off by checking that your old thermostat is no longer functioning.
  3. Remove the old thermostat. Pull off the faceplate, photograph the wiring, and label every wire with the terminal letter. This step is critical -- the Wyze uses different terminal labels than some older thermostats.
  4. Install the C-wire adapter at the furnace if needed. Follow the Wyze app instructions for your specific wiring configuration.
  5. Mount the Wyze backplate on the wall using the included screws and level.
  6. Connect wires to the Wyze terminals. The terminals are color-coded and clearly labeled. Push each wire in firmly until it clicks into the push-in connector.
  7. Attach the thermostat to the backplate.
  8. Restore power at the breaker.
  9. Complete setup in the Wyze app:
    • Open the app and tap the "+" icon, then select Thermostat
    • Follow the configuration wizard to select your system type
    • Connect the thermostat to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
    • Set your initial temperature preferences

HVAC Compatibility Notes

The Wyze Thermostat supports conventional systems with up to 2 stages of heating and 1 stage of cooling, heat pumps with auxiliary heat, and basic humidifier or dehumidifier connections. It has terminals for R, W1, W2, Y1, G, C, O/B, and an accessory connection. For heat pump systems, make sure you connect the O/B wire and select the correct reversing valve orientation during setup (energize on cool vs. energize on heat).

Smart Home Integration

The Wyze Thermostat works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control. You can set temperatures, switch between modes, and check the current reading by voice. It does not support Apple HomeKit natively. The Wyze app handles scheduling and home/away routines. If you have other Wyze devices, you can create rules that tie the thermostat to motion sensors or cameras -- for example, setting the thermostat to away mode when no motion is detected for a set period. Home Assistant users can integrate the Wyze Thermostat through the Wyze integration or third-party plugins.

Energy Saving Features

  • Home/Away routines can adjust the temperature based on manual triggers, schedules, or other Wyze device activity
  • 7-day scheduling lets you program different temperatures for each day of the week
  • Usage history in the Wyze app shows how long your system has been running each day
  • Behavior-based suggestions help you find opportunities to reduce energy use
  • Temperature differential settings let you control how far the actual temperature can drift from the set point before the system kicks on, which prevents short cycling

Troubleshooting

  • No power after installation: If the thermostat does not turn on, install the included C-wire adapter at the furnace. Without adequate power, the thermostat cannot boot. Follow the Wyze app instructions for C-wire adapter placement on the furnace control board.
  • Won't connect to Wi-Fi: The Wyze Thermostat only supports 2.4GHz networks. If your router uses a combined band name, try temporarily splitting the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into separate SSIDs for setup. Make sure your phone is on the same 2.4GHz network during pairing.
  • Heating or cooling running in the wrong direction: If the system heats when it should cool (or vice versa), you likely have the system type configured incorrectly. Go to thermostat settings in the Wyze app and verify whether your system is set as conventional or heat pump. For heat pumps, also check the O/B wire configuration.
  • Blank screen or thermostat keeps rebooting: Check for a short at the thermostat terminals. Pull the thermostat off the base and inspect the wiring. A bare wire touching the wrong terminal or the metal base plate can cause repeated reboots.
  • Factory reset: On the thermostat, go to Settings, then Device Info, then tap Reset. This clears all settings and returns the unit to its out-of-box state. You will need to re-run setup in the Wyze app.
