Common Causes
- Wi-Fi connection lost or the thermostat is out of range of the router
- Wiring issue from the initial installation (loose or incorrect wire connections)
- The C-wire is missing or providing insufficient power
- The HVAC system's circuit breaker has tripped
- Alexa app lost communication with the thermostat
- The thermostat firmware is outdated
- HVAC system safety lockout preventing heating or cooling from engaging
Step 1: Check Power and Display
- Look at the Amazon Smart Thermostat's display. If it is completely blank, the device is not receiving power.
- Check your circuit breaker to make sure the HVAC system's breaker has not tripped. Reset it if necessary.
- If the breaker is fine but the thermostat display is still blank, the issue is likely with the wiring. The most common cause is a missing or disconnected C-wire (common wire), which provides continuous 24V power to the thermostat.
- Turn off the breaker, remove the thermostat from the wall plate, and inspect the wire connections. Verify each wire is fully inserted into the correct terminal and seated firmly.
- If you do not have a C-wire, you will need a C-wire adapter kit for the thermostat to receive reliable power.
Step 2: Verify Wi-Fi Connection
- Open the Alexa app and go to Devices > Thermostats.
- Tap on the Amazon Smart Thermostat. If it shows Offline, the device has lost its Wi-Fi connection.
- The Amazon Smart Thermostat only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. If your router recently switched to 5GHz only, or if the 2.4GHz band name changed, the thermostat cannot connect.
- Check that your router is broadcasting the 2.4GHz band. Log in to your router's admin panel to verify.
- If the thermostat is located far from the router (such as in a hallway or basement), the signal may be too weak. Consider adding a Wi-Fi extender near the thermostat.
Step 3: Restart the Thermostat
- Go to your circuit breaker and turn off the breaker for your HVAC system.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Turn the breaker back on. The thermostat will reboot and attempt to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
- Wait 2 to 3 minutes for the device to fully restart and appear online in the Alexa app.
Step 4: Fix "Not Controlling" Issues
If the thermostat appears connected but is not actually heating or cooling:
- Open the Alexa app, go to the thermostat, and verify the mode is set correctly. Options include Heat, Cool, Auto, and Off. Make sure it is not set to Off.
- Check the set temperature compared to the current temperature. In cooling mode, the set temperature must be lower than the current temperature for the AC to engage. In heating mode, it must be higher.
- Many HVAC systems have a compressor delay of 3 to 5 minutes between cycles to protect the equipment. If the system recently turned off, wait 5 minutes before testing again.
- Go to the thermostat and manually adjust the temperature by turning the dial. Listen for the HVAC system to click on within a minute. If it does not engage, the issue may be with the HVAC system itself.
Step 5: Reconnect in the Alexa App
- If the thermostat is powered on but not appearing in the Alexa app, try removing and re-adding it.
- In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Thermostats > Amazon Smart Thermostat > Settings.
- Tap Deregister to remove the device from your account.
- Then go to Devices > + > Add Device > Thermostat > Amazon and follow the on-screen instructions to re-pair.
- During re-pairing, you will need to connect the thermostat to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network again.
Step 6: Check Schedule and Hunches Settings
- If the thermostat seems to change temperature on its own, check if a schedule is set. Go to the thermostat in the Alexa app and look for scheduled temperature changes.
- Check if Hunches is enabled. Hunches allows Alexa to automatically adjust the temperature based on your patterns. Disable it in the Alexa app under More > Hunches if you want full manual control.
- Check if any Alexa Routines are adjusting the thermostat. Go to More > Routines and look for routines that include thermostat actions.
Step 7: Factory Reset
- On the thermostat itself, press and hold the top button for about 10 seconds until the display resets.
- The device will restart and enter setup mode.
- Re-add it through the Alexa app and reconfigure your HVAC settings.
When to Contact Support
If the thermostat has power and Wi-Fi connectivity but your HVAC system never engages, the problem may be with the HVAC equipment rather than the thermostat. Contact an HVAC technician to inspect the furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump. If the thermostat display is cracked or unresponsive, contact Amazon Customer Support for a replacement.
