August Smart Lock Troubleshooting
August locks retrofit over existing deadbolts. They use Bluetooth for local control and WiFi (via built-in or Connect bridge) for remote access.
Lock Won't Pair
Initial Setup
- Install the lock on your door (keep the existing key cylinder)
- Download August app and create account
- Enable Bluetooth on your phone
- Tap + in the app to add a new lock
- Follow calibration steps to set lock/unlock positions
Pairing Issues
- Remove batteries, wait 10 seconds, reinsert
- Ensure you're within Bluetooth range (a few feet)
- Close and reopen the August app
- Factory reset: Remove batteries, hold button, reinsert batteries while holding
Remote Access Setup
For control away from home:
- WiFi Smart Lock: Built-in WiFi, configure in app settings
- Smart Lock Pro: Requires August Connect bridge (sold separately)
- Connect must be within Bluetooth range of the lock
- Plugs into an outlet and bridges Bluetooth to WiFi
DoorSense Not Working
DoorSense detects if the door is open or closed:
- Align the magnet with the sensor on the lock body
- Gap should be minimal when door is closed
- Recalibrate in app > Lock > Settings > DoorSense
- Some door/frame materials may interfere
Auto-Lock/Auto-Unlock
Auto-Lock
- Enable in app settings with desired delay
- Requires DoorSense to detect door is closed
- Won't auto-lock if door is left open
Auto-Unlock
- Uses phone GPS and Bluetooth
- Grant location permission "Always"
- Calibrate by leaving home and returning
- Works best when phone reliably detects arrival
Calibration Issues
- If lock doesn't fully lock/unlock, recalibrate
- App > Lock > Settings > Calibrate Lock
- Ensure deadbolt moves freely without resistance
- Check that adapter (palm) is correctly fitted to thumb turn
HomeKit Integration
- August WiFi Lock supports HomeKit natively
- Smart Lock Pro requires Connect bridge for HomeKit
- Add via Apple Home app using the HomeKit code
- Lock appears in Home app with lock/unlock control
