Identifying the Issue

When your ChargePoint Home Flex is not connecting to Wi-Fi or not charging your electric vehicle, the LED ring on the front of the unit provides visual clues about the problem. A solid green light means the charger is ready but no vehicle is connected. A blinking green light indicates active charging. A yellow or red light signals a fault condition. If the ChargePoint app shows the charger as offline, or if your vehicle is plugged in but not receiving power, you will need to diagnose whether the issue is with the charger, the network, or the vehicle itself.

Common Causes

  • Wi-Fi connectivity loss: The Home Flex requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection. Network changes, router reboots, or signal weakness in the garage can cause disconnections
  • Circuit breaker tripped: A tripped 240V breaker will cut all power to the charger — no lights, no charging
  • Amperage set too high: If the charging amperage in the app exceeds your circuit's capacity, the breaker may trip during charging
  • Vehicle-side issue: The vehicle's onboard charger, charge port latch, or scheduled charging settings may prevent charging even when the Home Flex is functioning correctly
  • Extreme temperatures: Very cold or very hot garage temperatures can trigger the charger's thermal protection, temporarily pausing or reducing charging power
  • Firmware issue: Occasionally, a firmware update may introduce a bug or the update may fail mid-installation

Step-by-Step Fixes

  1. Check the LED ring: Note the color and pattern of the LED. Green means ready, blinking green means charging, yellow means a fault, and no light means no power. Refer to the ChargePoint app for a specific error message matching the LED state.
  2. Verify power supply: Check your electrical panel and confirm the 240V breaker for the charger is in the on position. If it has tripped, reset it. If it trips again immediately, reduce the amperage setting in the ChargePoint app or have an electrician inspect the circuit.
  3. Restart the charger: Toggle the circuit breaker off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. The charger will go through its startup cycle and attempt to reconnect to Wi-Fi automatically.
  4. Check Wi-Fi signal: Stand at the charger's location with your phone and check your Wi-Fi signal strength. If the signal is weak, consider adding a Wi-Fi extender in the garage. The Home Flex only connects to 2.4 GHz networks, so verify this band is available.
  5. Re-pair to Wi-Fi: If the charger will not reconnect automatically, open the ChargePoint app, go to your charger's settings, and select "Wi-Fi Settings." Follow the prompts to reconnect the charger to your 2.4 GHz network.
  6. Adjust amperage: In the ChargePoint app, navigate to your charger's settings and lower the maximum amperage. For a 40-amp breaker, set the charger to no more than 32 amps. For a 50-amp breaker, set it to no more than 40 amps. For a 60-amp breaker, you can use the full 48 amps.
  7. Test with the vehicle: Unplug the J1772 connector from your vehicle, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect it firmly until you hear a click. Check your vehicle's dashboard or app to confirm it recognizes the charger. Disable any scheduled charging settings in the vehicle temporarily to test immediate charging.
  8. Check for firmware updates: In the ChargePoint app, look for pending firmware updates and install them. Allow the charger to restart after the update completes.

When to Contact Support

If the LED ring remains red or yellow after restarting and the ChargePoint app shows a hardware fault, contact ChargePoint customer support. Also reach out if the breaker trips repeatedly despite correct amperage settings, as this may indicate a wiring fault that requires a licensed electrician. ChargePoint offers a manufacturer's warranty that covers hardware defects, so have your unit's serial number ready when calling.

Prevention Tips

Set the correct amperage in the ChargePoint app immediately after installation to prevent breaker trips. Use a Wi-Fi extender in the garage if signal strength is borderline. Enable scheduled charging in the ChargePoint app to take advantage of off-peak electricity rates and reduce strain on your home's electrical system during peak hours. Keep the J1772 connector stored in the holster when not in use to protect it from debris, moisture, and damage.
