Common Causes

When your ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced is not connecting to WiFi or is not properly controlling your HVAC system, the problem typically comes from one of these areas:

  • WiFi credentials changed on the router without updating the thermostat
  • Internet service outage in your area
  • Thermostat firmware needing an update
  • Wiring issue at the thermostat or furnace control board
  • Power Extender Kit (PEK) malfunction if no C-wire is available
  • HVAC equipment safety lockout triggered by the system
  • Incorrect thermostat configuration for your HVAC system type

Fixing Connection Issues

Step 1: Check Your Internet Service

Verify that other devices in your home can connect to the internet. If the internet is down, the ecobee thermostat will display a disconnected icon but will continue operating your HVAC system based on its saved schedule. The thermostat will reconnect automatically once your internet service resumes.

Step 2: Restart the Thermostat

  1. On the touchscreen, go to Main Menu, then Settings, then Reset.
  2. Tap Restart.
  3. Wait two minutes for the thermostat to reboot completely.
  4. Check whether the WiFi connection is restored.

Step 3: Re-enter WiFi Credentials

If the thermostat does not reconnect after restarting, your WiFi password may have changed.

  1. Navigate to Main Menu, then Settings, then WiFi.
  2. Select your network name from the list.
  3. Enter the current WiFi password.
  4. Tap Connect and wait for confirmation.

The ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi. Try the 2.4 GHz band if the 5 GHz connection is unreliable, as 2.4 GHz has better range through walls.

Step 4: Restart Your Router

Unplug your router, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait three minutes for it to boot fully. This clears temporary network issues that may be preventing the thermostat from connecting. After the router restarts, the thermostat should reconnect within a few minutes.

Fixing HVAC Control Issues

Step 5: Verify the Wiring

If the thermostat is connected to WiFi but is not controlling heating or cooling properly, there may be a wiring issue.

  1. Turn off power to the HVAC system at the breaker.
  2. Remove the thermostat from the wall plate.
  3. Check that each wire is firmly inserted into the correct terminal (R, G, Y, W, C).
  4. If a wire is loose, press the terminal release and reinsert it fully.
  5. Reattach the thermostat and restore power.

Step 6: Check the Power Extender Kit

If your system does not have a C-wire and you installed the Power Extender Kit (PEK), a loose connection at the furnace can cause the thermostat to lose power intermittently or fail to control the HVAC system.

  • Turn off the HVAC breaker.
  • Open the furnace panel and locate the PEK module.
  • Verify all five wires on the PEK are connected to the correct terminals on the furnace control board.
  • Tighten any loose connections.
  • Close the panel and restore power.

Step 7: Check HVAC Equipment Settings

In the ecobee app or on the thermostat, go to Main Menu, then Settings, then Installation Settings, then Equipment. Verify that your HVAC system type is configured correctly. Incorrect settings, such as the thermostat thinking you have a heat pump when you have a conventional furnace, will cause improper operation. Confirm the following:

  • Heating type matches your system (forced air, boiler, heat pump)
  • Cooling stages match your AC unit
  • Fan control is set appropriately (HVAC or ecobee controlled)

Step 8: Look for HVAC Safety Lockouts

Some HVAC systems enter a safety lockout if they detect a problem such as overheating, a failed ignition, or a tripped high-limit switch. If the thermostat is calling for heat or cool but nothing happens, check your furnace or air handler for error codes. Most systems have a blinking LED on the control board that indicates the error. Refer to your HVAC system's manual for the error code meanings. A lockout may require resetting power at the breaker for 30 seconds.

When to Contact Support

If the thermostat displays error messages about wiring problems or the HVAC system repeatedly locks out, contact a qualified HVAC technician to inspect the equipment. For thermostat-specific issues like WiFi module failure, contact ecobee Support with your serial number for warranty assistance.
