Understanding the Issue

The Eve Energy Outlet is a smart outlet adapter that plugs into a standard wall outlet and provides HomeKit control over connected appliances, along with energy monitoring. When the device stops controlling power or becomes unresponsive, the issue is usually related to connectivity, power supply, or HomeKit configuration.

Common Causes

  • The Eve Energy has lost its Bluetooth or Thread connection to the Apple Home hub
  • The wall outlet providing power to the Eve Energy is switched off or not working
  • The connected appliance exceeds the Eve Energy's maximum power rating
  • The HomeKit home hub (HomePod, HomePod Mini, or Apple TV 4K) is offline
  • Firmware on the Eve Energy is outdated
  • The Thread network has gaps preventing reliable communication
  • HomeKit automations or schedules controlling the outlet have been disabled or corrupted

Step 1: Check Physical Power

  1. Verify that the wall outlet powering the Eve Energy is working by plugging in a different device (like a lamp) directly into the outlet.
  2. Check the Eve Energy's LED indicator. A lit LED means the device has power; no LED means the outlet may be off or the device may be faulty.
  3. If the outlet is controlled by a wall switch, make sure the switch is in the on position.
  4. Unplug the Eve Energy, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in to perform a power cycle.

Step 2: Verify the Connected Appliance

  1. Check that the appliance plugged into the Eve Energy does not exceed its maximum rated power (typically 1800W or 15A for the US version, or the rating specified on the device).
  2. Test the connected appliance by plugging it directly into the wall outlet without the Eve Energy. If the appliance does not work, the issue is with the appliance itself.
  3. If the appliance draws a large inrush current (such as a space heater or power tool), it may cause the Eve Energy to trip its internal safety shutoff.

Step 3: Check HomeKit Connectivity

  1. Open the Apple Home app and find the Eve Energy in your room list.
  2. If it shows No Response, the device has lost connection to your home hub.
  3. For Thread-enabled models, open the Eve app and go to Settings > Thread Network. Verify the Eve Energy appears in the Thread network topology.
  4. Confirm your Thread border router (HomePod Mini or Apple TV 4K) is powered on and shows as Connected in the Home app's home settings.

Step 4: Restart the Device and Hub

  1. Unplug the Eve Energy from the wall outlet for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  2. Restart your home hub by unplugging your HomePod or Apple TV for 30 seconds and reconnecting it.
  3. Wait two to three minutes for both devices to reconnect.
  4. Attempt to toggle the Eve Energy on and off from the Home app.

Step 5: Check and Fix Automations

  1. If the Eve Energy turns on or off unexpectedly, check Automations in the Home app for any rules targeting this outlet.
  2. Review any schedules you created in the Eve app as well, since Eve allows independent scheduling.
  3. Disable or adjust any conflicting automations that may be overriding your manual control.

Step 6: Update Firmware

  1. Open the Eve app and go to Settings > Devices.
  2. Select the Eve Energy and check for available firmware updates.
  3. Install any updates and wait for the device to restart automatically.

Step 7: Reset and Re-Pair

  1. If the Eve Energy remains unresponsive, press and hold the button on the device for 10 seconds to perform a factory reset.
  2. Remove the device from the Home app by selecting it, opening settings, and choosing Remove Accessory.
  3. Re-add the Eve Energy by scanning its HomeKit setup code.
  4. Assign it to the correct room and reconfigure any automations or schedules.

Additional Tips

  • Thread-enabled Eve Energy plugs also act as Thread routers, helping extend your Thread mesh network. Placing them throughout your home improves reliability for all Thread accessories.
  • Use the energy monitoring feature in the Eve app to track power consumption and identify appliances that draw unusual amounts of power.
  • If you rely on the Eve Energy to control a critical appliance (such as a sump pump), ensure strong Thread coverage to minimize disconnections.
