Identifying the Issue

If your Enbrighten Add-On Smart Outlet isn't controlling the connected fixture, or the master Z-Wave switch won't pair with your hub, you may be dealing with a wiring problem, a Z-Wave communication issue, or a compatibility conflict. Common symptoms include the add-on paddle doing nothing when pressed, the master switch working locally but not remotely, the master switch failing to join the Z-Wave network during inclusion, or the system working from one location but not the other.

Common Causes

  • Traveler wire not connected: The add-on outlet communicates with the master switch through a physical traveler wire. If this wire is loose, disconnected, or connected to the wrong terminal, the add-on will not function.
  • Incorrect add-on pairing: The Enbrighten Add-On does not have its own Z-Wave radio — it only works with a GE Enbrighten master switch. Using it with a standard 3-way switch or another brand's smart switch will not work.
  • Previous Z-Wave data on master switch: If the master switch was previously paired to another hub, residual network data prevents it from joining your current Z-Wave network.
  • Neutral wire issue: Both the master switch and the add-on require a neutral wire connection. A missing or loose neutral at either location causes unreliable behavior or complete failure.
  • Wiring confusion from old 3-way setup: When replacing traditional 3-way switches, it's common to confuse the traveler wire with the line or load wire, especially in older homes with non-standard wire colors.

Step-by-Step Fixes

  1. Verify the master switch works independently. At the master switch location, press the paddle to turn the connected fixture on and off. If the master switch works on its own, the issue is isolated to the add-on wiring or the traveler connection.
  2. Check the traveler wire at both locations. Turn off the circuit breaker. At the master switch, confirm the traveler wire is connected to the Traveler terminal. At the add-on location, verify the same wire connects to the add-on's Traveler terminal. The traveler wire should run continuously between the two switch boxes.
  3. Verify neutral connections. At both the master and add-on locations, confirm the white neutral wire is securely attached to the Neutral terminal. A loose neutral at the add-on is the most overlooked cause of add-on failure.
  4. Confirm you're using the correct add-on. The Enbrighten Add-On is specifically designed for GE/Jasco master switches. It is not interchangeable with standard 3-way switches, Leviton add-ons, or other brands. Check the model number to confirm compatibility.
  5. Exclude and re-pair the master switch. If the master switch won't respond to hub commands, put your hub into exclusion mode and tap the master switch's top paddle. Then put the hub into inclusion mode and tap the paddle again to re-pair. The add-on does not need to be paired separately — it communicates through the master switch's wired connection.
  6. Run a Z-Wave network repair. After re-pairing, run a network repair or heal from your hub's Z-Wave settings. This rebuilds routing tables and ensures the master switch has a reliable communication path to the hub.
  7. Factory reset the master switch. As a last resort, rapidly tap the top paddle three times, then the bottom paddle three times to factory reset the master switch. After the reset, run exclusion followed by inclusion to pair it fresh.

When to Contact Support

If the master switch won't power on despite correct wiring, the add-on remains unresponsive after verifying all connections, or you notice any burning smell or excessive heat from either device, stop using the circuit immediately and contact Jasco support at 1-800-654-8483 or visit byjasco.com/support. Bring your model numbers for both the master switch and the add-on when contacting support.

Prevention Tips

When installing a multi-location setup, label each wire with tape before disconnecting the old switches — this saves time and prevents wiring mistakes. Always verify the traveler wire is continuous between locations using a multimeter in continuity mode before connecting the switches. Run a Z-Wave network repair after any new device pairing. Keep your hub firmware updated to ensure the best Z-Wave compatibility with GE Enbrighten devices.
