Common Causes

The Google Nest Cam (Battery) can show as offline or fail to record for reasons specific to its battery-powered design. Understanding these causes will help you troubleshoot effectively.

  • Depleted battery — If the battery has drained completely, the camera will go offline and stop recording until recharged.
  • Weak Wi-Fi signal at the camera's location — Since battery cameras are often mounted outdoors or in remote spots, they may be at the edge of your Wi-Fi range, causing intermittent connectivity.
  • Camera turned off in the app — The Google Home app allows you to toggle the camera off, which stops all recording and removes it from the live view.
  • Home/Away Assist disabling recording — If this feature is enabled and detects someone is home, the camera may not record events.
  • Extreme temperatures — The Nest Cam (Battery) operates between -20 and 40 degrees Celsius. Temperatures outside this range can cause the camera to shut down to protect the battery.
  • Wi-Fi network changes — A changed Wi-Fi password, new router, or switched network name will cause the camera to lose its connection.

Step 1: Check the Battery Level

  1. Open the Google Home app and tap on the Nest Cam.
  2. Look for the battery percentage indicator. If it shows 0% or very low, the camera has shut down to preserve the battery.
  3. Remove the camera from its mount and charge it using the included USB-C cable. A full charge takes approximately five hours.
  4. While charging, the LED on the back of the camera will show a pulsing light. A solid green light indicates a full charge.
  5. Remount the camera after charging and verify it comes back online in the app.

Step 2: Verify Wi-Fi Signal Strength

  1. In the Google Home app, select the Nest Cam and tap the gear icon for settings.
  2. Check the Wi-Fi signal strength indicator. If it shows weak or poor signal, the camera may frequently drop offline.
  3. Move your Wi-Fi router closer to the camera's location, or add a mesh Wi-Fi node or range extender to boost the signal in that area.
  4. If the camera is mounted outdoors, consider a weatherproof Wi-Fi extender positioned between your router and the camera.
  5. Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in.

Step 3: Verify Camera and Recording Settings

  1. In the Google Home app, select the Nest Cam and check that the camera toggle is on.
  2. Review your Home/Away Assist settings. If the camera is set to record only when you are away, it will not record while you are detected at home. Adjust or disable this feature if needed.
  3. Check your Activity Zones to ensure the zones cover the areas where motion should trigger a recording.
  4. Verify your notification settings include the event types you care about: people, vehicles, animals, or all motion.

Step 4: Power Cycle the Camera

  1. Remove the camera from its mount.
  2. Press and hold the button on the back of the camera for 10 seconds until the LED blinks.
  3. Release the button and wait for the camera to restart. The LED will cycle through its boot sequence.
  4. Remount the camera and check if it appears online in the Google Home app.

Step 5: Factory Reset and Reconnect

If the camera continues to show offline or fails to record after trying the previous steps, a factory reset is the next option.

  1. Remove the camera from the mount.
  2. Press and hold the reset button on the back of the camera for approximately 12 seconds until the LED flashes white rapidly, then releases to a pulsing pattern.
  3. In the Google Home app, remove the camera from your device list.
  4. Set up the camera again as a new device by tapping + > Set up device > New device and scanning the QR code on the back of the camera.
  5. Reconnect to your Wi-Fi network and reconfigure your recording preferences and activity zones.

Extending Battery Life

If the camera frequently goes offline due to battery drain, consider these adjustments to extend its runtime between charges.

  • Reduce video quality in the camera settings to lower the power consumption per recording.
  • Narrow your activity zones to reduce the number of triggered events.
  • Decrease clip length for recorded events.
  • Use Home/Away Assist to only record when you are not home.
  • If the location has a nearby outlet, connect a weatherproof USB-C cable for continuous power, eliminating battery concerns entirely.
