Common Causes

When your Google Nest Cam (Indoor, Wired) stops connecting to your network or fails to record events, the issue usually falls into one of these categories.

  • Wi-Fi network changes — If you recently changed your Wi-Fi password, switched routers, or changed your network name, the camera will lose its connection and cannot reconnect automatically.
  • Router or internet outage — Even brief outages can cause the camera to drop offline and fail to reconnect without intervention.
  • Power supply interruption — A loose USB cable or a faulty power adapter can cause the camera to cycle on and off or lose power entirely.
  • Firmware update failure — A failed or interrupted firmware update can leave the camera in a partially functional state.
  • Google Home app account issues — If you changed your Google account password or if there is a Google services outage, the camera may appear offline in the app.
  • Full local storage or expired cloud storage — Without a Nest Aware subscription, the camera only stores three hours of event-based clips. If the storage system encounters an error, recording may stop.

Step 1: Check Power and Physical Connections

  1. Verify that the USB cable is firmly connected to both the camera and the power adapter.
  2. Check that the power adapter is plugged securely into a working outlet. Try a different outlet to rule out a dead socket.
  3. Look at the camera's LED status light. A solid white light means the camera is powered on and working. A pulsing white light means it is in setup mode. No light means there is no power.
  4. Try a different USB cable if available to rule out a damaged cable.

Step 2: Verify Wi-Fi Connectivity

  1. Open the Google Home app and select your Nest Cam.
  2. Check the device status. If it shows "Offline," the camera has lost its Wi-Fi connection.
  3. Restart your Wi-Fi router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in. Wait two to three minutes for it to fully restart.
  4. Power cycle the camera by unplugging it for 10 seconds and plugging it back in. Wait for the LED to stabilize.
  5. If your network name or password changed recently, you will need to factory reset the camera and set it up again (see Step 5).

Step 3: Check Recording Settings

  1. In the Google Home app, tap your Nest Cam and open its settings by tapping the gear icon.
  2. Verify that Camera is toggled on. If the camera has been turned off via the app, no recording occurs.
  3. Check that your notification preferences include the event types you want to record (motion, people, etc.).
  4. If you have activity zones configured, ensure they cover the areas where you expect events to be recorded.
  5. Review your Home/Away Assist settings. If this feature is enabled and the app thinks you are home, the camera may not be recording.

Step 4: Check Your Nest Aware Subscription

  1. Open the Google Home app and go to Settings > Nest Aware.
  2. Verify that your subscription is active. If it expired, you will still get three hours of free event-based recording, but any clips older than three hours will not be available.
  3. If you recently changed your payment method, check that the new payment was processed successfully.

Step 5: Factory Reset and Re-setup

If the camera remains offline or fails to record after the above steps, perform a factory reset.

  1. Locate the reset button on the back of the camera.
  2. Press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds. The LED will flash and then turn to a pulsing white light, indicating the camera is in setup mode.
  3. Open the Google Home app, remove the old camera device if it still appears, and set up the camera as a new device by tapping + > Set up device > New device.
  4. Scan the QR code on the camera, connect to your Wi-Fi, and configure your recording and notification settings from scratch.

When to Contact Google Support

If the camera's LED does not turn on at all despite confirmed power, or if it repeatedly drops offline within minutes of reconnecting, there may be a hardware issue. Contact Google Nest Support for warranty evaluation and potential replacement.
