Understanding the Issue
The Google Nest Doorbell (Battery) may experience connectivity problems or fail to send motion and visitor alerts. Because this model runs on a rechargeable battery and connects over Wi-Fi, issues can arise from signal strength, battery level, app settings, or Nest Aware configuration.
Common Causes
- Low or depleted battery preventing the doorbell from staying online
- Weak Wi-Fi signal at the doorbell's outdoor mounting location
- Notification settings disabled on your phone or in the Google Home app
- The doorbell's Wi-Fi connection was lost after a router change or password update
- Activity Zones or alert sensitivity settings are misconfigured
- The doorbell firmware needs an update
- Extreme cold weather reducing battery performance
Step 1: Check Battery Level
- Open the Google Home app and select the Nest Doorbell.
- Check the battery percentage displayed on the device card.
- If the battery is below 15 percent, the doorbell may stop recording and sending alerts. Remove the doorbell from its mount and charge it using the included USB-C cable.
- A full charge takes approximately 2 to 3 hours. Reinstall the doorbell once charged.
- If the battery drains quickly, consider connecting the doorbell to existing doorbell wiring for continuous trickle charging.
Step 2: Check Wi-Fi Connection
- In the Google Home app, select the Nest Doorbell and go to Settings > Device Information.
- Check the Wi-Fi signal strength. If it shows as weak or poor, the doorbell may frequently disconnect.
- Stand at the doorbell's mounting location with your phone and check your Wi-Fi signal strength there. If your phone has weak signal, the doorbell will too.
- Move your Wi-Fi router closer to the front door, add a mesh Wi-Fi node or range extender near the entry area, or switch to a 2.4 GHz network for better outdoor range.
- If you recently changed your Wi-Fi password or router, you will need to reconnect the doorbell. Remove it from the Google Home app and set it up again.
Step 3: Verify Notification Settings
- On your phone, go to Settings > Notifications and ensure the Google Home app has notification permissions enabled.
- In the Google Home app, select the Nest Doorbell and tap Settings > Notifications.
- Confirm that notifications are turned on for the types of events you want to be alerted about — doorbell presses, people, packages, motion, and other categories.
- Check that Do Not Disturb is not enabled on your phone, as this will suppress all notifications.
- If you have a Nest Aware subscription, verify that intelligent alert types (people, packages, animals, vehicles) are enabled in the alert settings.
Step 4: Check Activity Zones
- In the Google Home app, go to the doorbell settings and select Activity Zones.
- If Activity Zones are configured, the doorbell only sends alerts for motion detected within those zones. Make sure the zones cover the areas you care about (walkway, porch, driveway).
- If you are missing alerts for certain areas, expand the Activity Zones or disable zone-based filtering temporarily to test.
Step 5: Restart the Doorbell
- In the Google Home app, select the Nest Doorbell, tap Settings, and choose Restart.
- If the doorbell is unresponsive in the app, remove it from the mount and press and hold the reset button on the back for 10 seconds to restart it (a short press restarts without factory reset).
- Wait three to five minutes for the doorbell to fully reconnect to Wi-Fi and the Google Home servers.
Step 6: Update Firmware
- In the Google Home app, go to the doorbell's Settings > Device Information.
- Check the firmware version. Firmware updates are delivered automatically, but the doorbell must be online and have sufficient battery.
- If an update appears to be pending, ensure the doorbell remains online and charged until the update completes.
Step 7: Factory Reset and Re-Add
- If the doorbell remains unresponsive, perform a factory reset by pressing and holding the reset button on the back for about 12 seconds until the LED flashes white.
- Remove the doorbell from the Google Home app.
- Set it up again as a new device by scanning the QR code and following the setup process.
- Reconfigure your alert preferences, Activity Zones, and notification settings.
Additional Tips
- In cold weather (below 0°C / 32°F), battery performance degrades significantly. If you live in a cold climate, consider the wired Nest Doorbell model or connect battery wiring for continuous charging.
- Bright direct sunlight hitting the camera lens can trigger false motion alerts. Adjust Activity Zones to exclude areas with constant sun-induced movement.
- The free tier provides 3 hours of event-based video history. For 30 or 60 days of history, subscribe to Nest Aware or Nest Aware Plus.
