Understanding the Issue

The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) features a large borderless display, Matter support, and Wi-Fi connectivity. When the thermostat fails to connect to your network or the Google Home app, it can prevent remote control, scheduling, and energy-saving features from functioning properly.

Common Causes

  • The thermostat is too far from the Wi-Fi router for a stable connection
  • The Wi-Fi network password was changed without updating the thermostat
  • The thermostat does not have adequate power from the HVAC wiring (missing or faulty C-wire)
  • The router is using settings incompatible with the thermostat (e.g., Wi-Fi 6 compatibility mode)
  • A firmware update is pending or has failed
  • The Google Home app needs to be updated
  • Network congestion or too many devices on the same Wi-Fi network

Step 1: Check the Thermostat Display

  1. Walk up to the Nest Learning Thermostat to activate its proximity display.
  2. If the display is blank or dim, the thermostat may not be receiving adequate power. Check the wiring connections at the base plate.
  3. Navigate to Settings > Network on the thermostat to check the Wi-Fi connection status.
  4. If the display shows "No connection" or "Wi-Fi error," the thermostat has lost its network link.

Step 2: Verify Wi-Fi Network Settings

  1. On the thermostat, go to Settings > Network and select your Wi-Fi network.
  2. Re-enter your Wi-Fi password if prompted. The 4th Gen thermostat's display makes entering passwords easier than older models.
  3. Ensure the thermostat is connecting to a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network. If your router combines both bands, the thermostat should auto-select the best one.
  4. Check that your router's security is set to WPA2 or WPA3. Older security modes (WEP) may cause connection issues.
  5. If your router uses MAC address filtering, add the thermostat's MAC address to the allowed list (found in the thermostat's network settings).

Step 3: Check Power and Wiring

  1. Navigate to Settings > Technical Info > Power on the thermostat to check battery voltage and power status.
  2. The battery voltage should be above 3.6V. If it is significantly lower, the thermostat may not have enough power to maintain Wi-Fi.
  3. If the system lacks a C-wire, install the included Nest Power Connector at the furnace to provide continuous power. Without a C-wire, the thermostat charges intermittently from the HVAC call signal, which may not be sufficient for a stable Wi-Fi connection.
  4. Turn off the HVAC breaker, check that all wire connections on the thermostat base plate are secure, and restore power.

Step 4: Restart the Thermostat

  1. On the thermostat, go to Settings > Reset > Restart.
  2. The thermostat will reboot and attempt to reconnect to Wi-Fi automatically.
  3. Wait two to three minutes for the restart to complete.
  4. If the thermostat is completely unresponsive, pull it off the base plate, wait 30 seconds, and reattach it. This forces a hardware restart.

Step 5: Restart Your Router

  1. Unplug your Wi-Fi router for 30 seconds and plug it back in.
  2. Wait for the router to fully boot (usually two to three minutes).
  3. Check the thermostat's Wi-Fi status to see if it reconnects.
  4. If using a mesh Wi-Fi system, also restart the mesh node closest to the thermostat.

Step 6: Update the Google Home App

  1. Open your phone's app store and check for updates to the Google Home app.
  2. Install any available updates.
  3. Open the Google Home app and check if the thermostat appears and is controllable.
  4. If the thermostat still does not appear, remove it from the app and add it again using + > Set up device > New device.

Step 7: Factory Reset the Thermostat

  1. If all else fails, perform a factory reset on the thermostat. Go to Settings > Reset > All Settings.
  2. This will erase all schedules, preferences, and network settings.
  3. After the reset, reconnect to Wi-Fi, sign in to your Google account, and reconfigure your heating and cooling preferences.
  4. Re-enable Home/Away Assist and your preferred schedule settings.

Additional Tips

  • The 4th Gen Learning Thermostat supports Matter, so it can also be added to other Matter-compatible platforms like Apple Home. If connection issues persist with one platform, try controlling it through another to narrow down the problem.
  • If the thermostat disconnects during heavy HVAC use, the issue is likely power-related. Ensure the C-wire or Nest Power Connector is properly installed.
  • Place the thermostat on an interior wall away from direct sunlight, drafts, and vents for the most accurate temperature readings and stable operation.
