Google Wifi is a mesh router system providing whole-home WiFi coverage. This guide covers device connectivity and mesh network issues.
Initial Setup Issues
Symptoms
- App can't find router
- Won't connect to modem
- Setup fails
Solutions
- Modem restart - Restart modem, wait 2 minutes, then power on Google Wifi.
- Ethernet connection - Connect modem to WAN port on primary Google Wifi.
- Use Google Home app - Set up via Google Home app, not old Google Wifi app.
- Bluetooth enabled - Enable phone Bluetooth for initial discovery.
- Factory reset - Hold reset button for 10 seconds if setup repeatedly fails.
Devices Not Connecting to WiFi
Symptoms
- Smart devices won't connect
- Some devices connect, others don't
- 2.4GHz devices failing
Solutions
- Single SSID - Google Wifi uses combined 2.4/5GHz. Older devices may struggle.
- IoT network - Consider creating guest network for IoT devices if issues persist.
- Device limit - Check you haven't exceeded connected device limits.
- MAC filtering - Ensure no MAC filtering is accidentally enabled.
- Restart mesh - Restart entire mesh network in Google Home app.
Mesh Point Issues
Symptoms
- Secondary points offline
- Weak connection indicator
- Devices not roaming properly
Solutions
- Placement - Keep mesh points within 2 rooms of each other, no more than 50 feet.
- Mesh test - Run mesh test in app to check connection quality.
- Wired backhaul - Connect mesh points via ethernet for best performance.
- Restart point - Unplug specific point for 30 seconds and reconnect.
Speed and Performance
Symptoms
- Slow internet speeds
- Buffering on streaming
- High latency
Solutions
- Run speed test - Use app's built-in speed test to check internet speed.
- ISP issues - If speed test shows slow, contact ISP.
- Check priority device - Priority device feature can limit bandwidth to others.
- Update firmware - Google Wifi updates automatically but check in app.
Smart Home Integration
Symptoms
- Smart devices frequently offline
- Can't discover new devices
- Matter devices won't connect
Solutions
- DHCP reservations - Assign static IPs to problematic smart devices.
- Family WiFi pause - Ensure devices aren't accidentally paused.
- Guest network - Guest network is isolated. Don't put smart devices there unless intended.
- UPnP - UPnP is enabled by default for device discovery.
