The Hampton Bay Universal Ceiling Fan Controller provides Zigbee-based smart control for ceiling fans. This guide covers pairing and fan control issues.

Controller Not Pairing

Symptoms

  • Hub can't find controller
  • LED not responding
  • Pairing times out

Solutions

  1. Zigbee hub required - Works with SmartThings, Hubitat, or Zigbee-compatible hubs.
  2. Factory reset - Pull the chain 4 times quickly, then hold until LED blinks.
  3. Pairing mode - Put hub in Zigbee pairing mode, then reset controller.
  4. Close proximity - Keep within 10 feet of hub during pairing.
  5. Power cycle fan - Turn off at wall switch, wait 10 seconds, turn back on.

Fan Speed Not Controlling

Symptoms

  • Only off and high work
  • Medium/low speeds not responding
  • Fan runs erratically

Solutions

  1. Fan compatibility - Works with AC motor ceiling fans, not DC or remote-controlled.
  2. Remove existing receiver - If fan had RF remote, bypass or remove receiver.
  3. Wiring check - Verify controller is wired correctly per instructions.
  4. Speed settings - Configure hub for 3-speed or 4-speed operation.

Light Control Issues

Symptoms

  • Light not responding
  • Dimming not working
  • Light and fan linked

Solutions

  1. Separate wiring - Light needs separate wire from fan for independent control.
  2. Dimmer support - Not all versions support light dimming. Check model.
  3. Hub configuration - Configure light as separate endpoint in hub.
  4. Compatible bulbs - Use dimmable LED bulbs for dimming function.

Remote Control

Symptoms

  • Physical remote not working
  • Can't use app and remote together

Solutions

  1. Remove old remote - Zigbee controller replaces RF remote functionality.
  2. Wall control - Use hub/app for smart control instead of physical remote.
  3. Smart scenes - Create scenes for common fan/light combinations.

Zigbee Network Issues

Symptoms

  • Connection drops
  • Delayed response
  • Controller goes offline

Solutions

  1. Mesh strength - Add Zigbee repeaters (smart plugs) between hub and controller.
  2. Channel interference - Change Zigbee channel if WiFi interference suspected.
  3. Re-pair - Remove and re-add controller if connection unreliable.
  4. Power cycling - Turn off at wall switch occasionally to reset.
