Identifying the Issue

If your IKEA TRADFRI Control Outlet is not working, you may notice that the connected appliance does not turn on or off through the app, the outlet does not respond to a paired remote or motion sensor, or the device has disappeared from the IKEA Home Smart app entirely. The TRADFRI Control Outlet is a Zigbee smart plug that works with the IKEA Dirigera hub or the older TRADFRI gateway. It also functions as a Zigbee signal repeater, extending your mesh network. Issues with this outlet often affect other devices that rely on it for signal routing.

Common Causes

  • Power cycling or outage — After a power outage, the outlet may not automatically reconnect to the Zigbee network, or it may default to an off state
  • Lost Zigbee pairing — Hub resets, firmware updates, or Zigbee network congestion can cause the outlet to lose its connection to the hub
  • Motion sensor pairing issues — If paired with a TRADFRI motion sensor, the link between the two may break, causing the motion sensor to stop triggering the outlet
  • Overload or thermal protection — Plugging in a device that draws more power than the outlet is rated for can trigger a protective shutdown
  • Firmware out of date — Older firmware can cause erratic behavior, especially after hub firmware updates change Zigbee stack behavior

Step-by-Step Fixes

  1. Power cycle the outlet. Unplug the TRADFRI Control Outlet from the wall, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. The LED indicator on the front should illuminate, confirming it has power. Try toggling it from the IKEA Home Smart app or by pressing the physical button on the outlet.
  2. Check the physical button. Press the small button on the front of the outlet to manually toggle it on and off. If the physical button works but app control does not, the issue is with the Zigbee connection rather than the outlet hardware.
  3. Factory reset the outlet. Using a pin or small tool, press and hold the reset button on the outlet for 10 seconds. The LED will flash rapidly and then turn off, confirming a factory reset. This clears all pairing data.
  4. Re-pair to the hub. Open the IKEA Home Smart app, tap +, and select Plugs. The app will scan for Zigbee devices. The outlet should appear within 30 seconds. Tap to confirm the pairing.
  5. Re-link the motion sensor. If you were using the outlet with a TRADFRI motion sensor, go to the motion sensor's settings in the app and reassign it to trigger the outlet. You may need to factory reset and re-pair the motion sensor as well if it is not communicating.
  6. Update firmware. After pairing, check for firmware updates in the outlet's settings within the IKEA Home Smart app. Apply any available updates to resolve known bugs.
  7. Check the connected device. Ensure the appliance plugged into the outlet does not exceed the maximum rated wattage (check the outlet's specifications — typically around 10A or 2300W for European models, or 1800W for US models). An overloaded outlet may refuse to turn on as a safety measure.

When to Contact Support

If the outlet's LED does not light up when plugged in, or if the physical button does not toggle the outlet at all, the unit may have suffered a hardware failure. This can happen after a power surge or if a connected device drew excessive current. Contact IKEA support for a replacement under warranty.

Prevention Tips

Use a surge protector between the wall outlet and the TRADFRI Control Outlet to guard against power surge damage. Avoid plugging in high-draw appliances like space heaters that could exceed the outlet's rated wattage. Keep the outlet's firmware updated through the IKEA Home Smart app. Since the outlet doubles as a Zigbee repeater, keeping it plugged in and powered helps maintain your Zigbee mesh network — removing it can create dead spots for other devices. If using it with a motion sensor, periodically test the automation to catch any pairing issues early.
