Identifying the Issue
When your Level Lock+ (Plus) stops responding, you might experience the lock not engaging or disengaging when commanded from the Level Home app, Bluetooth connection failures, auto-unlock not triggering when you arrive home, or the lock not responding to HomeKit commands. Since the Level Lock+ relies primarily on Bluetooth for communication, connectivity issues are the most common category of problems you'll encounter.
Common Causes
- Low battery: The Level Lock+ runs on a single CR2 battery. As the battery depletes, the lock may become sluggish or stop responding to commands entirely. This is the most frequent cause of lock issues.
- Bluetooth range limitations: Bluetooth has a limited range of about 30 feet, and walls, doors, and other obstructions significantly reduce that. If your phone is too far from the lock, commands won't reach it.
- Phone Bluetooth settings: Background app restrictions on your phone can prevent the Level Home app from maintaining a Bluetooth connection, which breaks auto-unlock functionality.
- Door misalignment: If the door has shifted due to temperature changes, humidity, or settling, the deadbolt may not extend or retract fully, causing the motor to strain and commands to fail.
- Firmware needing update: Outdated lock firmware can cause compatibility issues with newer phone operating systems and the latest Level Home app version.
Step-by-Step Fixes
- Replace the battery: Open the interior assembly's battery compartment and replace the CR2 battery with a fresh one. Use a quality brand-name battery for the best performance. After inserting the new battery, the lock will recalibrate automatically. Check the Level Home app to confirm the battery level reads full.
- Check Bluetooth connectivity: Open your phone's Bluetooth settings and confirm Bluetooth is enabled. Open the Level Home app and check if the lock shows as connected. If not, stand within three feet of the lock and wait for it to connect. Toggle your phone's Bluetooth off and on if the lock doesn't appear.
- Force close and reopen the app: Close the Level Home app completely (swipe it away from the app switcher), then reopen it. This re-establishes the Bluetooth connection and refreshes the lock's status.
- Check phone background permissions: For auto-unlock to work, the Level Home app needs permission to run in the background and access your location. On iOS, go to Settings > Level > Location and select "Always." On Android, ensure the app isn't restricted by battery optimization. Also enable "Precise Location" for reliable proximity detection.
- Verify door alignment: Close the door and manually try to extend the deadbolt using the thumb turn. If it catches or requires force, the door may be misaligned with the strike plate. Adjust the strike plate position or use a file to slightly enlarge the strike plate opening so the bolt slides freely.
- Update the lock firmware: Open the Level Home app, go to the lock's settings, and check for firmware updates. Keep your phone close to the lock during the update process, which may take several minutes. Do not remove the battery during a firmware update.
- Recalibrate the lock: In the Level Home app, go to the lock's settings and find the calibration option. Run the calibration process to re-establish the locked and unlocked positions. This is especially important after adjusting door alignment or replacing hardware.
- Factory reset as last resort: If the lock remains unresponsive, perform a factory reset through the Level Home app under the lock's settings. This clears all configurations, and you'll need to re-pair the lock and set up all users and integrations again.
When to Contact Support
Contact Level support if the lock motor doesn't respond at all with a fresh battery, if the lock makes grinding or clicking noises without moving the bolt, or if the Bluetooth module fails to broadcast (the lock is never visible to the app). These symptoms suggest a hardware failure that requires replacement. Level offers a limited warranty that covers manufacturing defects.
Prevention Tips
- Replace the CR2 battery proactively when the Level Home app shows it at 20% or below, rather than waiting for it to die completely.
- Check door alignment seasonally, as wood doors can expand and contract with humidity and temperature changes.
- Keep the Level Home app updated to maintain compatibility with your phone's operating system and the lock's firmware.
- If you use auto-unlock, periodically verify that location permissions are still set to "Always" — phone OS updates sometimes reset these permissions.
