Identifying the Issue

If your Nanoleaf Skylight ceiling panels are not working, you may experience the panels not illuminating after installation, the panels appearing offline in the Nanoleaf app, individual panels in a multi-panel setup remaining dark, the panels not connecting to Wi-Fi during initial configuration, or the panels flickering or displaying uneven brightness. The Skylight is a hardwired ceiling fixture that connects to your home's electrical system and communicates via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi through its built-in controller. Issues can stem from electrical wiring, Wi-Fi connectivity, or the linking cables between panels.

Common Causes

  • A loose or incorrect wire connection at the ceiling junction box (most common for new installations)
  • The circuit breaker is off or tripped
  • A linking cable between panels in a multi-panel setup is loose or disconnected
  • The controller has lost its Wi-Fi connection or the network is on 5GHz only
  • The wall switch was turned off, cutting power to the hardwired panels
  • A firmware update failed or is pending
  • The junction box wiring is incorrect (reversed hot and neutral, or missing ground)

Step-by-Step Fixes

  1. Check the wall switch and breaker: Ensure the wall switch controlling the ceiling circuit is on. Check the circuit breaker panel to confirm the circuit has not tripped. If the breaker is off, turn it back on.
  2. Verify wiring (for new installations): Turn off the circuit breaker and use a voltage tester to confirm power is off. Open the junction box and inspect the wire connections. Confirm black connects to black (hot), white to white (neutral), and green or bare copper to ground. Loose wire connectors are a frequent cause of non-functioning installations. Reseat any loose connections firmly.
  3. Check linking cables: For multi-panel setups, inspect the linking cables between each panel. Disconnect and reconnect each cable at both ends, ensuring they are fully seated. A loose linking cable will cause all downstream panels to go dark even if the first panel works.
  4. Power cycle the system: Turn the wall switch off for 15 seconds, then back on. Allow up to 60 seconds for the controller to boot and reconnect to Wi-Fi. Check the Nanoleaf app for online status.
  5. Verify Wi-Fi: Confirm your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz network. The Skylight does not support 5GHz. If the panels light up but do not appear in the app, the Wi-Fi connection is the issue. Try temporarily placing your phone next to the Skylight panels and checking the Wi-Fi signal strength.
  6. Update firmware: Open the Nanoleaf app and check for controller firmware updates. Install any available updates, as they often address connectivity and performance issues.
  7. Reset the Skylight: Toggle the wall switch off and on five times with approximately one second between each toggle. The panels should flash to indicate a factory reset. Set them up again through the Nanoleaf app as new devices.
  8. Check for electrical issues: If the panels flicker or intermittently cut out, the issue may be with the circuit wiring upstream of the junction box. Loose connections at other points in the circuit can cause intermittent power interruptions. A licensed electrician can diagnose and repair these issues safely.

When to Contact Support

If a single panel does not illuminate despite confirmed power at the junction box and a working linking cable, the panel's internal LED driver may be defective. Contact Nanoleaf support for a warranty replacement panel. If the controller does not respond at all after verified wiring, the controller unit may need replacement. For any wiring-related issues you are unable to diagnose, consult a licensed electrician before contacting Nanoleaf, as incorrect wiring can permanently damage the panels and may void the warranty.

Prevention Tips

Have wiring work inspected by a licensed electrician if you are not confident in electrical installation. Set a static IP or DHCP reservation for the Skylight controller in your router to prevent disconnection from IP address changes. Keep the wall switch on permanently and use the app or voice assistants for daily control. If you must use a wall switch, consider a smart switch that sends commands to the panels rather than cutting power. Keep the Nanoleaf app and controller firmware updated for the latest stability improvements. Periodically check linking cable connections in multi-panel setups, especially if you notice intermittent panel dropouts.
