The Nespresso Vertuo Next with WiFi lets you brew from your phone or with Alexa voice commands. When the machine will not connect or coffee comes out lukewarm or weak, the fix is usually something you can handle at home.

Machine Not Connecting

  1. Open the Nespresso app with Bluetooth enabled. Initial pairing always happens over Bluetooth, even for WiFi features.
  2. Keep your phone within 3 feet. Kitchen metal appliances interfere with Bluetooth.
  3. The machine must be powered on and idle -- steady white LED ring. Flashing orange or red means an error to address first.
  4. WiFi setup follows Bluetooth pairing. The machine supports 2.4GHz only.
  5. On Android, enable location services -- the app needs them to scan for Bluetooth devices.
  6. Factory reset if pairing repeatedly fails. On the Vertuo Next, hold the button for 7 seconds in the specific state described in your manual.

Brewing Problems

  1. Ensure the capsule is fully seated. The barcode reader needs correct positioning. If the machine spins up then stops, the capsule shifted.
  2. Close the lever completely until it clicks. A partially closed head will not brew.
  3. Fill the water tank and press it firmly into place until it clicks.
  4. Thin, watery coffee? The machine likely needs descaling. Mineral buildup reduces extraction pressure.
  5. Only half a cup? Air bubble in the water line. Run the machine without a capsule 2-3 times to purge it.

Water Temperature Issues

  • The first cup after a long idle period is often cooler. Preheat by running without a capsule and discarding the water.
  • Descale if temperature has dropped over time. Mineral deposits insulate the heating element.
  • Use room-temperature water in the tank, not cold from the fridge.
  • Preheat your cup with hot water -- cold ceramic absorbs a lot of heat from the coffee.

Descaling Process

  1. Empty the capsule container and drip tray. Place a large container under the spout.
  2. Fill the tank with descaling solution mixed with water per the packet instructions.
  3. Enter descaling mode by pressing button and lever together for 3 seconds (LED turns orange).
  4. Press the button to start. When finished, refill with clean water and run two rinse cycles.
  5. The whole process takes about 20 minutes. Do not unplug during descaling.

Alexa Voice Brewing

  1. Link the Nespresso skill in the Alexa app.
  2. Say "Alexa, ask Nespresso to make coffee." A capsule must be loaded and the water tank filled.
  3. The machine will not brew if it detects the head is open or the tank is empty -- this is a safety feature.
  4. If Alexa says the machine is unreachable, check its WiFi connection. The machine may be in sleep mode but should wake on command.

Firmware Updates

Updates push through the app over WiFi. They are not automatic -- approve them when notified. Do not unplug during an update. If one fails, power cycle and retry.

When to Contact Nespresso

Contact Nespresso if the machine leaks from the base, the LED flashes red and will not clear after a reset, or the machine makes unusual grinding noises. Nespresso offers a one-year warranty and their phone support can often diagnose issues and send replacements quickly.
